When Children Won a Victory.
A curious and pretty custom is ob
served every year in the city of Ham
burg to celebrate a famous victory
which was won by little children more
than four hundred years ago. In one
of the numerous sieges Hamburg was
reduced to the last extremity, when it
was suggested that all the children
should be sent out unprotected into
the camp of the besiegers as the mute
appeal for mercy of the helpless and
the innocent.- This was done. The
rough soldiery of the investing army
saw with amazement, and then with
pity, a long procession of little ones,
clad in white, come out of the city
and march boldiy iato their camp.
The sight melted their hearts. They
threw down their arms and, plucking
branches offnm.f.r,gxgsthe neighbor
ing orchards, they gave.ihem to the
children to take back to\the\city as
a token of peace. This was a great
victory, which has ever 3since been
commemorated at Hamburg by a pro
cession of boys and girls dressed in
white and carrying branches of the
cherry tree in their hands.—Detroit

A ’Squire not a great distance from
here was visitad by a client, who pro
tested that a liveryman had “shaved”
him dreadfully, and he wanted to
come up to him. :
“I asked him,” explained the client,
“th's charge for a team to go to Ded
ham. He replied $l. I ordered the
team, and on my return offered in
payment $1; he insisted on another
dollar for coming back, and made me
pay Ik’
The ’Squire gave him legal advice,
which follows: Going to the livery
man, he asked: “How much will you
charge for a team to Salem?”
“Five dollars,” replied the stable
owner. :
‘““‘Harness him up!” The client went
to Salem and returned by railroad,
went to the stabler, saying: “Here’s
your $56.”
“Where’s my team?” asked the liv
eryman, in surprise. :
“At Salem,” answered the client.
“l only hired the team to go to Sa
lem.”—Philadelphia Public Ledger.

Catarrh o. the kidneys is very common
indeed. It is a pity this fact is not better

People have kidney disease. They take
some diuretic, honing to get better. They
never once think of catarrh. Kidney dis
ease and catarrh are seldom associated in
the minds cf t.ue people, and, alas, it is
not very often associated in the minds of
the physici:ns. Too few physicians recog
