IIow about that “scrap” iu towu
ou the 10th iust.?
Two candidates gay* us a “pleas
ant call” last week.
Bowling got the copper, but “ah,
there!” He failed to get the beer I
Mr. J. A. Butt, Jr., and family
went on a ehort visit to Culber
son this week. Mr. Butt, accom
by Mr. F. G. Duncan, of
Ridge, left ou Tuesday for
S. C.
Mr. J. A. Butt, Jr., is agent for
the Walter A. Wood harvesting
machines. They are certainly a
great improvemeut over anything
of the kind that we have in this
section. These machines are so
well geared up that you can mow
grass will* a yoke of oxen.
The Sunday sellout nl
phia nod Ilocky Hill churches aro
getting along nicely. This speaks
well for our community. The
young men have recently organ
ized » literary and debating socie
ty at Philadelphia church.
It is characteristic of a certain
family in Union county to perse
cute every young man who marries :
unless bo bows and bends to them.
A woman whoso tongue is so long
that she can sit in the ‘’big house”
and lick (lie pot vessels out in the
kitchen is a good one, isn’t she?
I wonder if Mr. A. R. Butt, can
didate for county (ressurer, lias
gotten over that shock ho received
not long ago in lllairsvill? IIow
about it, any way? Can a mao an
nounce his candidacy for an office
in The Herald, or must ho publish
it on the bouse lops, or must he
tuck it up on some sign post at
cross roads?
Two year* ago we‘‘had our shirt
ofT” trying to purauade folks lo
vote for us, hut we never promised
two candidates, running for the
same office, that we would support
Ibom. Re careful, Mr. Candidate.
Some of you have already gotten
yourselves “into it” by doing some
thing like that two years ago. Of
course I will not publish Ibis af
fair unless that fellow wants me
to. Just bo quiet!
fonts folks aro opposed to mar
ried men wearing collars and culls,
and also laundered shirts. I guess
it is because they haven’t them to
near themselves is the reason they
talk so much. If a man bujs any
thing and pays for it ho hasaper
fect right to wear it when and
where ho pleases. It seoms that
the world will never become thor
oughly enlightened.
Hou. G. R. Glenn, candidate for
State School Commissioner, would
have the people believe that State
uniformity of toxtbooks is a prin
cipal “theory” of the Republican
party. Let us see if this is true
or not. We will give The Herald
readers the benefit of this “theory.”
The states named below are all
Democratic: Virginia, North Car
olina, South Carolina, Tennessee,
Louisiana qnd Missouri. The
[aw was passed by Democratic
legislatures in every one of these
states. There aso also other states
that have uniformity of textbooks.
I want to ask the readers of The
Herald one plain question: Was
Governor W. Y. Atkinson a true
Democrat or not? If he was not,
why did Democratic Georgia eloct
him governor? Yea, tho people of
Georgia will answer “Yes.” Prof.
Glenn was in favor of uuiformity
when he was appointed State
School Commissioner by Governor
Atkinson, but he has “flopped” not
long since. You all remember that
Governor Atkiusou was in favor
of state uuiformity. Do you be
lieve that Mr. Glenn is a truer
Democrat than Governor Atkin
son was? We think that Mr. Glenn
wanted to leave the impression on
the minds of the people that state
uuiformity of textbooks is a prin
ciple that noue but the rankest
Republicans favor. Now, fellow
citizouB. we have Bhown yon that
this doctrine is all untrue and is
agitated only for political specu
lation. I presume that Mr. Glonn
had his henchmen to fee 1 about
this “theory” and see if the people
of Georgia in general favored state
uuiformity before he “flopped.” In
my honest opinion, state uniform
ity of textbooks would be a good
thing. It would save a great ex
penditure for books for this sim
ple reason: When people move
from one county to another they
have to buy a different series of
textbooks. ll would be of grout
bs,,ofit to lo,lch, * r * "ho go from
odp county to another to teach.
Give us a State School Commis
sioner who favors state uniformi
ty ; then we will have elalo uni
fortuity of text books.
Whooping: Cough.
A woman who has had experi
ence with this disease, tells ln>w to
prevent any dangerouscousequeuc

children took whooping cough last
summer, our baby boy being only
three months old, and owing to our
giving them Chamberlain’s Co'fgh
Remedy, they lost none of their
plumpness and came out in much
better health than other children
whose parents did not use tl.i
remedy. Our oldest litlle girl
would cry' lustily for cough syrup
between whoops.— Jessie Pixkky
