“Subject: A Collusion bdiccen a Alegaiter and a
Water Snail:: Triumph of thc'gcaUr Snaik-
Detli i/ the AUgaiter .
“ There is an iland <>n a river lying
Which runs into gautinialy, n Warm country
Lying near the Tropicks ; covered with sand;
Hear and their a symptom of a Willow,
Hanging of its uinbei agii.us lima and branches
Over the clear streine meandering far below.
This w r as the home ot the now silent Alegaitcr,
When not in the other element coutin’d:
Hear he Would set Upon his legs a sleep
With one eye observant of Hies and other pas
sing
Objects : a while it kept a going on so:
Fereless of danger was the nappy Aiegaiter!
But alas! in an evil our he was foiuccd to
Wake! that drciueof 151 is was two sweet for
him
1 morning the sun arose with unusooal splen
dor,
Whitch allso did our Alegaitcr, coining from
the water,
His scales a flinging of the raise of the son back
To the fouutain head with the originlv sprung
But having had nothing to cat for some tune, he
Was sleeping and gap’d in a short time, widely,
Unfolded soon a wealth of perl-w hite tcili,
The rais of the sin sdou shot his sinister eye
Because of there mniooul spendor and warmth.
The Evil our (which 1 sed wu* now come
Evidently a good ch ins for a water-Snaik
Os the large Species, which soon apeared
Into the horisoii near ‘he bank where repose and
Calmlv in slope the A legal ti r bet< re spoken ot.
About 90 foot was ii;a length (not the gaiter)
And lie was aperieuilv a well propotioned Snaik,
When he was all ush.'.re lie gland upon
The iland will. appoval, bill was soon
“ Astonished with the view A lost to wonder
(from Wats)
( For jest then ho begun for the Alegaiter,)
Being a uateral Eaeinv af his’u, he worked h.s
self,
Into a fury, also a ni position.
Before the Alegaitcr m il could ope
His evs (in other wolds, p reeve his danger)
The Snaik had enveh p. u his bodv just 1#
Times with folds voioomiiios and rast, (from
Milton; ;
And had tore off several Scads in the confusion,
Besides squesing him awfully onto Ins atomic.
Just then, by a fortinute turn in a fairs,
He ceased into his mouth thecareles tale
Os the unreflecting water-Snaik ! Groan despe
rate,
He finding that Ids tale was fast squesed
Terrible, while tbev roled al( over the ilaud,
* * * * *
It was a well-conilucktcd Afair; no noise
Disturbed the harmony of the Seen, vesapt
Onct when a Wilow lias snaped into by the
roaling,
Each of the combatencc had’iit a minit for hol

So the coufl’c was nater.l'y tr. in-njou*!
But soon by grate force the tale wu bit com
pletely es: but the cggzcrtion was too much
For his delicate Const. tootioii: lie felt a com
pression
Onto his chest, and generally ever Ids body :
When he ecspres’d Ins breathing, it was with
grate
DilHculty that he felt inspir’d again onct more,
Os coarse this State must sufer a rcvolootion,
So the Alegaitcr give but 1 veil and expired,
The water-Snaik reuled hisself and survay’d
For say 10 minutes the condition of
His so: then wondering what made his talc hurt
He sloly went off for to cool.”

to these Periodicals that people must look for

their well established literary, scientific and

consideration of the reading public.

TTAR AND EYE.— Deafness, par-.
1 J tinlor total, entirely remocul: —j
Dr. Alsophcrt begs to call the atten-j
tion of those suffering from a total or partial
loss us the hearing, to the following facts. lie■
treats diseases of the middle and infernal Ear
with Medicated Douches, such as is practised in!
the Infirmaries of Berlin, Lcipsic, Brussels,
Hamburg and St. Petersburg, and lately by the
most distinguished London Aurists, with the!
most wonderful success; indeed, it is the only
method that has been uniformly successful.— !
The best proof of the efficacy of the treatment’
will be a reference to nearly nine hand red names,
residents of the United States, Canada, New;
Brunswick and Nova Scotia, who have been re-’
stored to acute hearing, and not a single, solita
ry case, to our knowledge, did we fail to effect!
either a partial or total restoration of the Hear
ing, when our advice and instructions were’
j faithfully and punctually adhered to. Many 1
who could not hear the report of a pistol at
arm’s length, can now hear a watch beat at tl:.,
distance of four feet.
In cases of mucimtis accumulation in the Eus
tachian Tube and Tympanum, Inflammation of
the Mucus Membrane, Nervous Affections, Dis
ease of the Membrana Tymnani, i.ciumonlyl
called the “ Drum,” or when the disease can tie
traced to the effects of Fever, colds, the use of
Quinine, Mercurial Medicines, Gatherings in the
Ears in childhood, Ac., Dr. Alsophcrt s treat
-1 ment stands pre-eminent. Whore the Auditory
Canal Is dry and scaly, with little or no secre
tion, when the deafness is accompanied with;
noises in the Ear, like falling water, chirping of
insects, ringing of hells, rustling of leaves, con
tinual pulsations, discharge of matter, or when,!
in stooping, a sensation is felt as if a rush of
blood to the head took place, when the hearing
is less acute in dull, cloudy weather, or when a
cold has been taken, this method of treating
this disease, is infallible.
In deaf and dumb cases m v'experience war
rants me in saying, that if the hearing was at!
any time good, very much can be accomplished, i
In the Deaf and Dumb School, out of a class ofj
14, I succeeded in restoring four to acute hear-j
ing. Dr. Alsophcrt begs respectfully to state,
that in those cases he undertakes lie guarantees
a successful result, complete restoration, or such
a marked improvement as will bn perfectly sat
isfactory, if !*-is remedies are faithfully applied,!
and directions adhered to.
Applicants will please state tlieir age, dura-!
tion of disease, if matter issues from the external
passage, if there are noises in the Ears, state!
of general health, and what they suppose to hare}
been the cause of the deafness. When the hear-;
ing is restored, it is expected that those in easy
circumstances will pav liberally.

College of Physicians, and for years Senior Phv-j

eases of the Lungs.
In the treatment of Consumption by inhala-;
tion, I have obtained the results which wairant
me in asserting, that it is as curable as diseases
of the stomach and liver.
Breathing Medicines directly into the lungs is
certainly the rational mode of attacking the
disease, and like many other great beneficent
discoveries, it seems strange why such treatment
was not resorted to long ago. Where there sV
life there is now assured hope fi r the most seem 1
ingly hopeless cases, as throughout all the stages
of this insidious disease, the wonderful and beii
eficient.effects of his treatment are soon appar
ent. In cases also of Bronchitis, Asthma, Ac.,
inhaling of powders and vapors has been emi
nently successful, and of those suffering under
any of the above named complaints, I can guaran
tee speedy and certain relict. I have pleasure in
referring to 207 names, residents of New York
and neighborhood, who have been restored to vi
gorous health. About one third of the above
number according to the parents’ own state-j
incuts, were considered hopeless cases.
The inhaling Method is soothing, safe, and;
speedy, and consists in the administration of;
medicines in such a manner that they are eon-!
vcyed into the Lungs in the form of vapor, and
produces their action at the seat of the dis-]
case. Its practical success is destined to revolu-j
lionize the operations of the medical world and;
establish the entire curability of consumption.
Applicants will please state if they have bled

of their stomach and bowels. The necessary
