Mr. Buchanan and Forney.
The President has given notice to Mr.
Forney, Editor of the Philadelphia Press, j
of his intention to institute legal proceed- j
ings against him for an alleged libel con-
tained in an article on the California duel.
Below we give an extract or two from
the article in question:
Mr. Broderick was in every respect a J
representative inan ; not simply a repre
sentative of his class, but of the great prin- j
ciple involved in the struggle between the •
people and the Federal Administration.— j
Few men have attracted to themselves ■
more devoted friends than David C. Brod- :
erick, and the news that he has fallen in
the very prime of his life, a victim to the
insatiate and insatiable malevolence of the :
Federal Administration will be received
by these gallant men with sad and heavy ,
hearts.

Douglas and the Georgia Democracy.
We clip the following from the Augusta
Dispatch:
*• The Mobile Register claims the Dem
ocratic victory in Georgia, as a triumph
for Douglas.”
This claim, we are authorized to say, is
without foundation in tact. So far from
the recent glorious victory in Georgia be
ing a “ Douglas triumph,” it is a victory
more in spite of Stephen A Douglas. We
have already stated upon authority, that
Gov. Brown is not only opposed to Sena
tor Douglas’ peculiar views upon Squatter
Sovereignty and slavery in the Territories,
but he is also uncompromisingly opposed
t« his nomination by the Charleston Con
vention. Col. Gartrell took a bold position
against Douglas—not only opposing his
nomination, but positively declaring he
would not support him if nominated; and
CoL G. has been elected in the face of the
fiercest opposition, bv a majority double
that of any candidate who ever before ran
in the District
Speer, in the Third District, took bold
ground against Douglas, and though de
feated in the election, considerably reduc
ed the Opposition majority in bis District.
Crawford, in the 2d District, is elected
by tt triumphant majority, vet he took de
cided ground against Douglas. Indeed,
among all the Democratic candidates for
Congress in Georgia, we have not heard of
one that was not opposed to Douglas.—
Our own opinion is, formed from an ex
tensive knowledge of public sentiment in
the State, that Douglas cannot get a cor
poral’s guard in Georgia, for the nomina
tion at the Charleston Convention. If the
Mobile Register is flattering itself that
Douglas has any considerable strength in
Georgia, it is wofully mistaken, that's all.
