Going into Mourning.
A few weeks since, our friend Clark was
. lying sick with the bilious fever. The at
tack was severe, and he believed that death
was near. One morning he awoke from a
short sleep to hear a hurried and smoth
ered conversation in the adjoining room
i j n which his wife took part. The first
words that Clark caught were uttered by
hfs better half.
- "* “ On that ground," said she, “ I object
to mourning!”
“ Yes,” replied another, “ but the world
looks for it—it is fashionable, and ouc
might as well be out of the wOrld as out
of the fashion.”
“ Very true ?”
“ Here,” thought Clark, “is a nice wife.
She thinks I am about to die—to be plant
ed, if I may use the expression, in the
cold earth, and yet she refuses to go in
mourning for me. Ah ! me.”
“ Now that 1 am here, perhaps I had
better take your measure.”
“ The unfeeling wretch!" exclaimed he,
“ to think of sending for a dressmaker be
fore I am dead ! But I'll cheat her yet!
HI live for spite!"
“ Well,” mused the wife. “ I believe
you may measure me. I will let you buy
the trimming, and let it be as gay as pos
sible.”
“ What heartless ness;" groaned Clark.
“ Woman like, though. One husband- is
no sooner dead, than they set about en
trapping another. I can scarcely credit
it.”
“Ofcourse you will hive a flounce?”
- “ Two of them ; and as the body is to
be plain, I wish you to get wide gimp to
trim it.”
“ How w II you have the sleeves trim
med T"
“ With buttons and fringe.”
“ Well— well— this beats all,” sighed
poor Clark.
“ When do yon want the dress ?” in
quired the mantua maker.
“ I must have it in three days. My
husband will then be oil’ my hands, and I
shall be able to get out IV
“Oh! horrible—horrible !” ejaculated*
the sick man, “ 1 am only half dead, but
this blow will kill me.”
His wife heard him speak, and ran quick-
. ly to his bedside.
“ Did you speak, my dear ?" said she,
with the voice of an angel.
“ I heard it all, madam,” replied Clark.
“ All what, my dear ?”
“ The mourning—gay dresses—fringe
—everything. Oh ! Maria—Maria !”
“You rave!”
“ Do you take me for a fool V
“ Certainly not, my dear.”
“You expect me to be out of the way
in three days, do you ?”
“ yes, love; the doctor said you would
be well in that time.”
“What means the dresses?’’
“ It is the one you bought for me be
fore you were taken sick.”
“ But you were speaking of mourning?"
“We were talking of Mrs. TapCrly.”
“ Oh, is that it ?"
“Yes. love. You know she is poor,
And her family is large, and it must incon
venience her very much to find mourning
for them all. On this ground alone, 1 op
pose it.”
“ So—so—that's it, is it? I thought

A N improvement lias been applied to Boots

actual experiment.
j THE TIP consists of a piece of ropper or
i other indestructible material, neatly fastened
lj, o the toe of the boot or shoe, forming a com-
yplete protection. This invention is now pre
sented to the public, with the fullest knowl-
i edge of its practical utility, having been test
ed uver two years, and is destined entirely to
supercede the old style, for children’s, boys’
and youths’ boots anil shoes.
Tlie importance of this invention will be
rcaddy appreciated, as it is known that chil
dren invariably wear out their boots and shoes
first at the toe, and with this protection, they
will upon an average wear at least two or three
times as lougsis »Ue old style, while the ex
pense is but a trifle more.
This invention is also especially applicable
to miners’ boots, and all occupations subject-
yott were speaking of me, anti it distressed j mg the toe of the boot or shoe to be cut or
