THE VIDALIA ADVANCE
N. C. NAPIER, Editor and Publisher.
FRIDAY, MAY 6, 1921.
VOTE FOR THE UPBUILDING OF YOUR
HOME TOWN.
Statements tirade at the mass meeting of citi
zens last Friday evening to the efiect that promi
nent bankers and bond brokers arc of the opinion
that Vidalia 6 per cent bonds should bring anywhere
from 93 to 97 cents, and that for a number of years
these men did not expect the bond market to be
much better than it was now have done much to
crystalize public seutiment in Vidalia in favor of
the proposed bond issue for sewers, and the out
look now is for a splendid majority in support of
the issue. The low cost of labor at the present
time, the decline in the price of material, the need
of this city for sewers, both from a health stand
point as well as to get in line with the progressive
towns of this section all combine to make the ques
tion of sewerage for Vidalia appeal strongly to
our citizens.
Statements also made by th» representatives
of the three railroads of Vidalia that the officials
of these railroads, which will pay a large part of the
tax, were strongly in favor of this bond issue, be
cause they felt that this municipal improvement
would mean much for the future growth and pro
gress of the community, carried much weight.
Railroad corporations look at matters of this kind
from a distinctly mercenary standpopint, and the}'
know from the past history of all towns of our
size that the installation of a sewerage system
promotes the growth of the town and in the long
run means more business for the railroads, there
fore they always like to see bonds for sewerage
voted.
According to the tentative map suggested by
the engineers employed by the city, a few of the
best citizens of the town find that they are not ac
cessible to the sewer lines. Yet in nearly every
case these men are outspoken for bonds, for they
believe a sewerage system is necessary for our
town, and they realize, too, that the sooner a start
is made the quicker a sewer lino will be put by
their homes. These men exemplify the spirit of
true citizenship.
Tuesday, Mav 10th, is a date which should
mean much to Vidalia. As we have stid before,
Vidalia is blessed with wonderful railroad facili
ties the envy of many a neighboring town; and
with a rich agricultural section mound it, our fu
ture is secure if we but do our part. We cannot
expect to grow rapidly or much larger until we put
in sewers for men who would like to come I „ •
for business reasons will hesitate when they 1 u .
the city lias no sewerage system. We hope all 1
citizens will sttidv these matters carefully and vote
*or the upbuilding of their home town. Let us
vote sewers. Our city officials will get the best
price obtainable for our bonds, wili make the most
advantageous contract possible. And sliou’d a fair
price not he offered for the bonds, we feel they
have the interest of the city at heart and will defer
the sale of the bonds and the construction of a sew
erage system to a later date.

Why not a Retail Merchants Association in
Vidalia? SuCli an organization was recently or
ganized in Fitzgerald and many other towns, and
the merchants are finding that they have mutual
problems, and co-operation helps to overcome these
problems and means more business for each one.

SPECIAL NOTICE.
, Georgia—Toontbs County.
For a good cause, it is ordered that
an adjourned term of the regular
the state will never develop anything like the
wealth we could develop until the man who owns
the farm lives on his farm and until the man who
farms owns his own land. If some brainy legisla- 1
tor would work out some system whereby the ten
ant farmer could be encouraged to buy a farm, and
financial aid given him by the state over a long
period of time, the agricultural interests of the
state would then begin to prosper as never before.

WORTH PONDERING OVER.
i
:
5 During the recent Georgia Tech Industrial tour;
• over the state, Mr. W. R. Crites, of Savannah,
delivered a speech which contained many facts j
worth the careful consideration cT all Georgians.!
f We give an extract of it below:
Th<* Georgia farmer gels up to the alarm of a Con- j
1 necticut clock.
He buttons his Chicago suspender:, to Detroit over-1
e alls.,
Washes his face in a Pennsylvania pan with Cincin-
J nati soap.
Sits down to a Grand Rapids table
s Eats Chicago meat and Philadelphia hominy fried in
s Kansas lard on a St. Louis stove.
e Puts a New York bridle on a Missouri mule fed on
lowa corn.
• Ploughs a tieid with a South B nd plow.
Whe bed-time iomes he erads a chapter from a Bi
• ble printed in Boston and says a prayer written in Je
i rusalem.
V Crawls under a New Jersey blanket to be kept awake
r by a Cracker dog, the only home product on the place.
• The above sounds like an exaggeration, but when you
? go to your stores and your offices I want you to take a
little inventory.
The light will come streaming in through a Pittsburg
plate glass window.
’ As you sit down to your Michigan or Pennsylvania
- desk you will turn on a fan made in Schenectady, New
‘ York.
Write out your correspondence on a typewriter made
’ in Ilion, New York and sign it with a New York City foun
tain pen.
You will weigh up your commodities on a Toledo
’ computing scale.
Ring up your sales on a Dayton cash register.
Add up your accounts on a Dctroi, adding machine.
If you run a department store you* cash carrier sys
• tern will he made by Lamson of Boston. ,
When you are through with your day’s work you will
I lock your valuables in a safe made in Marietta, Ohio.
You will crawl into a Detroit automobile.
Roll home on Akron tires.
Let yourself into your home via a Connecticut lock.
And sit down and eat your dinne.- from plates made
I.n last Liverpool, Ohio.
Some days ago one of ur local hardware men called
me into his store and told me he had seen by the papers
that I felt that Georgia did not pay enough attention to
manufacturings I admitted it and suggested that we go
over his stock of hardware to sec what he had that was
made in Georgia. We took a hurried inventory and
found thtec articles—two brooms and mop.
On the day I worked up the data f or this talk F look
e’d through the pager of the Saturday Evening Post to
see what articles were advertised as oeing manufactured
in Georgia. There was not one.
And Georgia’s State Capitol is built of Indiana lime
stone.
Georgia has made much progress in manufac
turing during the past decade, but still there are
hundreds of manufactured articles which must be
imported to supply our needs, ihe money toll
we pay to other sections for goods which could as
profitably be manufactured in Georgia is stupen
dous. And one of the best ways to correct this
evil is to loyally patronize Georgia manufacturing
plants. A “Made in Georgia” label should always
’ have first consideration to the true Georgian.

| The Sunken Grave
Nothing can be sadder than a grave that is no longer a mound. The 1
inevitable has come to pass —tlie weight of the sodden earth has
% crushed in the last protection. It helps nothing to close the imagin
ation to what happens then ! Yet there is not the slightest necessity for
this barbarous, unsanitary, old fashioned method of burial. The Norwalk
Vault —at little cost —will protect absolutely and forever. Cement and
steel, waterproof and airtight, it seals in plain sight and becomes one solid .
piece of masonry that literally “Lasts through the Ages.” The best under
takers insist on its use.
