MAKING EVERY EFFORT

get the money that is due them.
Tuesday at the meeting of the board'
officer* of county banks were called j
in for a conference. Warrants for
the amount due the county have j
been sent the board by the >tate of !
ficials, but up to this time the board
has found it difficult to discount the j
warrants.
Next week a committee front the j
board will confer with some of the
banks of neighboring cities in an es- 1
fort to raise money on the state
warrants.

About Overdrafts
Overdrafts are not good for you nor for the bank.
There are plenty of reasons why you should not over
draw your account.
You have no right to do business that way. It
hurts your credit with the banker. An overdraft is in
fact a forced loan without security. Your overdraft
mav sometimes be honored, but it gets you in bud all
over. Our bank tries to be accommodating, but we do
not desire overdrafts—unsecured loans that ruin your
credit, injure our own standing and endanger the inter
* csts of our depositors. Don’t overdraw.

WOMAN’S RESPONSIBILITY
By F. F. Shannon, D. D.
i j Are we not more dependent upon
. I godliness in our women today than
never before in om history?
i Women have, as they ought to, a
large and determining power in pol
■ itics .as in various realms. There
: fore, it is imperative that our women
be true and high-minded. If the
womanhood of the twentieth cen
-1 tury goes wrong, civilization is doom
jed. Now, there are just as many
j pure and noble women today as ever
’ before; and I fear also more of the
; other kind. It is these that make
us shudder. There are no nation
destroyers quite so efficient as the
painted, powdered and perfumed har
lot. whose “house is the way to hell,
, going down to the chambers of
death.”
To speak of onl> one sign of de
cadence in many circles, consider the
crying shame of popular and inde
cent female attire. There is no rea
son why women should not be be
comingly modern in their dress. The
styles of our great grandmothers are !
not especially appealing to either
men or women; yet there are very;
weighty reasons why women should
not be vulgar in their apparel. One
is this: It is a sure sign that mod
esty has fled from their hearts and.
has NOT taken refuge on their per- 1
sons.
As always, one of the most res
ponsible sinners herein is our so
called “high society." When socie-[
ty becomes so high that its woman
hood flaunts its unblushing indecen
cies in the face of a broken and
bleeding and starving world, it has
descended to very low depths in
deed. That New York judge uttered
a timely rebuke ir. his court. A man
had been brought before him for in
sulting a woman. A serious offense,
the judge felt compelled to pronounce
a severe sentence upon the offender.
Turning to the woman, he said:
“Woman, in the name of decency
go home and dress yourself.”
Is it not timely advice for multi
tudes of women?
If, as Shakespeare thought, the ap
parel oft proclaims the man, much
more does it proclaim the woman—
what she is and what she isn’t. It is
terrible for men to be brazen in their j
wickedness; is it not even more ter- j
rible when women make it easy for i
men to walk in rite paths of death l
and destruction? Fur the niuthers,
wives and daughters of our own
cities and towns today, as well as for
those of ancient Jerusalem, Isaiah’s
words of warning should be taken to
heart;
“Moreover, the Lord said. Because
the daughters of Zion are haughty,
and walk with stretched forth necks
and wanton eyes, walking and minc
ing as they go. and making a tink
ling with their feet; therefore the
Lord will smite with a scab the
crown of the head of the daughters
of Zion, and the Lord will lay bare
their secret parts.’’—lsaiah 3:16-17.
