CARRYING A GREAT LOAD
From figures brought out at a recent meeting
of the Kiwanis Club, when the subject of support
for the Vidalia Hospital was up for discussion, it
it evident that our city and county are thrusting
a very heavy load of charity work upon the man
agers' of the hospital, and that something must be
done to relieve in some measure the hospital au
thorities from this burden.
Up to the Ist of June the hospital expense of
charity patients for the year had amounted in
round numbers to $2,'000. 1 hat would make the
hospital cajry a burden of something like $5,000
'for charity work each year. These figures do not
include any charge for medical treatment or for
operating fees, and it is safe to say that the physi
cian-and stirgeon in charge of the hospital are con
tributing out of their own pockets and from their
time and labor something like SB,OOO per year for
the relief of sickness and suffering in this section.
The management of the hospital stands ready,
like all true physicians, to do their part for the re
lief of the poor and unfortunate and they are ready
to perform operations and give medical treatVnent
without charge to this class, but it is asking too
much for them to carry the hospital expense also.
Some plan ought to be worked out by our county,
our city, churches and other organizations, where
by the hospital expenses, at least, of all charity
cases would he met.
We regard the hospital as a great asset to our
section and no doubt many lives are saved each
year from the fact that this modernly equipped
hospital is so quickly accessible to the people of
this section. We know of no nobler charity than
that some plan he worked out whereby the poor
and unfortunate can he given treatment when vic
tims of accident or sickness and disease.

A MATTER THAT CONCERNS
THE CIVILIZATION OF THIS COUNTRY
Decatur county is one county where the color
ed and white folks get along and there is never
trouble. The simple and plain reason of it is, we
have the highest class negroes in the world in this
county. Ninety per cent, of them are real citizens
and trying to be better ones and the white citi
are trying to help them. We have no room for ar
agitator in this county. We have some colo e .
citizens that any community would be glad to have
and we look after them.—Bainbridge Searchlight.
That’s interesting.
It would be interesting to read a complete
story of the negroes of Decatur county, their char
acter, their relations to the white race, etc.
What is it that goes to make up the highest
class negroes in the world? Different white men
would have different ideas, as to what is necessary
to qualify in that class. However, the main points
are these:
A' quiet, unpretentious negro.
One who is moral in habits.
Faithful to fulfill contracts.
Steadiness in work.

Saving a little from each year’s earnings.
Courtesy in general bearings.
There are a few such negroes found every
where.
It is difficult to find a better citizen anywhere
than a good negro citizen.
If all of the negroes in the South were as good
as the best of them, there would be no race ques
tion. No problem to settle.
To bring all of the negroes up to a level of the
best of them is something to dream about, out not
a thing to be accomplished. It is a matter, how
cver, that concerns the civilization of this country.
It is a big job that we should begin on. Like
other great tasks in shaping the destinies of na
tions and races, it will have to begin with the young
The negroes in this county twenty-five years from
to-day will be the negro children of to-day grown
up to manhood and womanhood. Go through the
thickly settled negro sections of your city and you
will see what the next generation of negroes is
being made from, and how they are being brought
up.
The more we work through the school teacher,
the social worker and the sanitary inspector to-day.
the less we will have to work through officers,
courts and juries a quarter of a century from now.

DAIRYING.
•
The .dairying industry is being rapidly develop
ed in South Georgia and many cities are discussing
the building of creameries as an aid to the farmers
in their section. We hope in the future to see a
creamery at Vidalia.
Make haste slowly, would be a good motto for
those who would see the dairying industry deve'op
cd in this section. To make dairying a success, we
must have permanent pastures, pure-bred cattle
and farmers must be prepared to give this branch
of their farm work careful and painstaking atten
tion.
To make a creamery a success, it is estimated
that from 600 to 800 cows must be milked in the
territory covered by the creamery to furnish the
creamery with a sufficient amount of cream to
make it possible for it to succeed. We aie quite
sure that this number could not be obtained in this
section at this time.
The business men of Dublin are planning the
building of a creamery for their county and far
mers in this section could easily make shipment to
this creamery at very little more expense than the
delivery of the cream to Vidalia. This would help
the Dublin creamery to succeed and it would make
it possible for farmers in this section to gradually
develop good herds.. Then in time to come it
might be that a creamery could be built here with
t vt ry assurance of success.

Somebody said: “Build fine churches , but
don’t forget the playgrounds for the boys.” We
think of this every time we go out Church street,
by our handsome church buildings and see the
boys playing ball in the street.
x
We hope the business men of Vidalia will get
together and arrange an appropriate celebration
for the 4th of July. This is the great American
holiday, when practically every line of business
takes a holiday, the towns and cities owe it to the
country surrounding them to arrange suitable pro
grams for the holiday.

l Oeveral otherwise excellent burial vaults have tops that are simply laid
1 over the casket and left to their own devices. This, of course, is
; handier and much cheaper. But what of its safety? The Norwalk
Vault leaves nothing to chance; its top is securely cemented ou by hand,
; and top and bottom become one solid piece of masonry. Naturally, tbere
! fore, the Norwalk is sold everywhere the best is wanted; and naturally the
best undertakers always recommend the Norwalk —it gives them a chance to
; guarantee the burial.
