THE VIDALIA ADVANCE
VOLUME XIX
FIRST BALE WAS
. SOLD eE MONDAY
RAISED BY MRS. FRED MATH
EWS SEASON STARTS ONE
WEEK EARLIER THAN LAST
CROP VERY SMALL.
The first bale of the new crop of
cotton was sold at Vidalia Monday,
the season this year starting a week
earlier than last year, when the first
new bale was brought in on the 22
of August. The bale this year was
from the Sharpe Spur section, hav
ing been raised on the farm ot Mrs.
Fred Mathews. It graded middling
and weighed 485. It was bought by
J. R. Coombs at ten ana a nail.
Accordingto reports from the cot
ton planters, tbe Toombs county
crop this season will be not much
over 4000 bales,. to compare with
5800 last season. It is said that tbe
acreage was cut about fifteen per
cent this year and that the use of
fertilizer was off more than fifty per
cent. Planters alscr say that there
is considerable of the cotton open in
the fields but that the recent rains
made picking impossible for some
days to come and that the weevil is
now attacking the grown bolls, hav
ing already taken the top crop.
There will be five active gins in
the county this season, and an active
market for the staple at all of them
except one.

NEWS ITEMS FROM
NEIGHBOR COUNTIES
(Montgomery Monitor)
The business conditions prevailing
in our section of the country at the
present time have caused the au
thorities of the Brewton-Parker In
stitute to postpone opening of the
institution for the fall term until Sep
tember 13th. It is' believed by those
who have sudied the situation that
the students will not be ready to'en
ter August 30th, the date formerly
decided upon to open, ana tnat
many coming in later will not only
lose that much time, but will make
it disadvantageous to the entire
school in the fact that the teachers
will then have to devote time to ex
amining these late entrants and in
this way lessen the profit of those
who began on time.
(Tattnall Journal)
A fire of unknown origin totally
destroyed the Tattnall Hardware
Company building and with it the
stock of goods and fixtures of the
hardware company, and also those
of the Marcus Quality Shop, at an
early hour Wednesday.
In addition, the plate glass front
of the Beasley Motor Company build
ing across the street, was totally
destroyed, and the building and plant
of the Tattnall Journal, just to the
rear of the hardware building, were
considerably damaged by fire and
water.
The fire originated in a pile of
boxes in the rear end of the Marcus
Quality Shop side of the hardware
building and was discovered about
one o’clock in the morning. The
fire spread so rapidly that both sides
of the building were in a mass of
flames in about fifteen minutes, and
then the firemen turned their whole
attention to saving nearby buildings.
The monetary loss is staggering
for this community, which has suf
fered several disastrous fires already
this year, reaching in the neighbor
hood of fifty thousand dollars, which
is partially covered by insurance.
(Swainsboro Forest-Blade)
The Solicitor-General of the Middle
Judicial Circuit is just as guilty as
guilty can be and he should receive
a sentence that will reach the full
limit of the law. On last Monday
morning he was actually caught in
the act of pushing a lawn mower
over his front yard. I don’t think
Col. Grey would do a trick of this
kind intentionally; he certainly must
have been hypnotized.
P. S.—Since writing the above.
Col. Grey has actually been seen
hoeing in his garden.

When Buying Hardware
Cultivate a habit of econ

that below a certain price it is im
