(irain and Grass Gra*n
It usually Is a good idea to avoid
the late rush for oat, wheat, rye,
hairy vetch, and pasture grass seed.
It is a little early now some will
think but it pays to look around and
select the seec.' you want and have it
bought now’ while the supply is liber
al and the price usually lower.
Oats and Hairy vetch make an ex
cellent fall cover crop that is also
good for grazing cattle or hogs dur
ing the late winter and early spring
after they have finished the velvet
bean fields. At the same time the
vetch is adding nitrogen to the soil
just like peas do during the summer.
During the fall of 1921 I saw a fie d
that produced 40 bushels of corn to the
acre that in 1919 only porduced about
8 bushels. The ow’iier sowed it with
oats and vetch the fall of 1919. Hog
ged this off during the spring. Sow
ed in peas the summer of 1920, whicn
was hogged down that fall. Then the
place was again sowed in vetch and
oat? to be grazed the spring of 1921.
The corn following this was a credit
to any Southern field and a revelation
of the value of cover crops to the
owner.
Making Hay for she Market
The practice of selling peavine hay
from land is probably one of the most
injurious to the lands and one of the
most expensive to the land owner.
The hay when sold carries so much
fertility from the soil that it is hard
to see how it can be replaced with
fertilizer and manures.
But the practice of selling this hay
to stock on your ow’n farm either fed
to them or hogged off after the peas
are ripe is beneficial in two ways.
Frist it gives you the use of this val
uable hay and second the manure re
turns three fourths of the fertility to
i the soil.
That resolves itself back to the old
saying the most economical way to
sell bulkey crops is through thef arm
animals. Wherever that is not possi
j ble, as is sometimes the case, every
effort should be made to put the hay
in as good shippiing condition as pos
sible.
Haying time will soon be here.
Remember the markets want BRIGHT
j SWEET hay WELL BALED. They
j want hay with 3 wires around it in
| stead of two becaus.e when a man gets
a carload of hay every bale that
i breaks must be sold at a loss or fed i
|to his own stock. They do net want
! any more of that w’aste than necessary

If you put the best apples on top, shade every
pound of butter, or when you are in the city slip

you will soon get into i dangerous moral rut.
Religion is the only thing that will get you
out of a moral rut and take you beyond the grave

hogs here by 11 o’clock. That was
because the through train ran at that
time and we usually wanted to get
them off on that train. The mention
ed this time will be extended until
later if necessary but we prefer that
they be brought in early if possible
as that moves them off with less loss.
We would like to have all hogs in by
11 o’clock if possible but can use them
later. Usullay the hogs are auct
ioned off at 1 or 2 o’clock giving the
buyers time to make the next point.
The cooperative hog sales belong
to the farmer and their degree of suc
cess depends on each one of them. It
is IMPORTANT that farmers let me
know at Lyons or Mr. Joe Jackson
know’ at Vidalia how many hogs they
will have.
Often in driving around I find more i
hogs that the owners are feeding for
the saile. A postal card will be of lit* j
tie trouble to you and will help us
great deal as well as helping your |
own sale if you will send one to me
telling me how many hogs you will j
have in the sale.

We already have two cars listed for
each point and expect to have more J
by that time. Cars are difficult to get
unless we know several days ahead
Os time. SO PLEASE LET US KNOW
AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE
THE SALE HOW MANY YOU WILL j
HAVE.
Prosperity Depends On t's
During the last two weeks I spent j
| my vacation back in a section of Geor- |
gia that has never grown cotton and !
cannot grow cotton to maturity. That j
is the first section of Georgia that 1 j
have been in that has not known what'
the deflation meant. Their crops are j
THURSDAY, AUGUST 31, 1922.
Corn, Cabbages,- Irish Potatoes, To
bacco, and Applies. They haul 40
miles to-market over roacs that a car
can hardly travel. It takes a good
driver to drive it in 5 "hours and it re
quires 3 days for the farmers to haul
a load' to market and get back.
Unfortunately for us now, we have
learned that cotton was always
pendable. Now that it has failed us
so often it hurts and it is hard for us
to make the neccessary changes to
adapt ourselves and our farms to the
changed conditions.
The past two weeks of wet weather
has impressed how uncertain cotton
is in a manner never to be forgotten
; but old Toombs is not whipped by any
j means. Too many of our farmers
: have been working toward other
! means of livelihood and we are on a
sound basis now.
