BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS WILL
OFFICIALLY OPEN BASKET
BALL SEASON HERE FRIDAY.

liminary practice, the basketball sea
son will be opened for the local High
School when both the boys’ and girls’
teams play games w’ith'Soperton High
Schol, on the local court, Friday even
ing. The Soperton lad and lassies
have ben playing for some time, have
assembled two splendid teams and if
our boys and girls expect to start
the season off with victories, they
will have to play a superior brand of
basketball.
A large number of boys and girls
are trying for the teams and the
starting lineups are very uncertaiq.
The indications are that many of
them will be used in these games.
The boys will play one other game
before Christmas while th egirls will
content themselves with practice and
interclass games until after the holi
days.
On next Tuesday evening the boys
wil play Alamo High School in their
final game before Christmas. Alamo
for the past few years has had a form
able quintette and the “Indians” will
have to play hard to defeat them.
After Christmas a full scedule of
games will be played with teams from
the following towns: Dublin, East
man, Lyons, Reidsville, Abbieville,
Wrightsville, Alamo and Soperton.

DR. J. W. PALMER IS APPOINTED
TRUSTEE GA. BAPTIST HOSPITAL
APPOINTMENT HAVING BEEN
MADE AT RECENT BAPTIST
CONVENTION HELD IN VAL
DOSTA
News has been received here of
the appointment of Dr. J. W. Palmer
of Ailey as Trustee of the Georgia
Baptist Hospital in Atlanta; his ap
pointment having been made at the
Georgia Baptist Convention which
took place in Valdosta this week.
Dr. Palmer is well equipped for the
post, both by his professional exper
ience and by his former experience
with the Georgia Baptist Hospital,
having served as a member of the
Board of Trustees at a former time.
Besides this post, Dr. Palmer is Sec
retary of the Railroad Division of the
Southern Medical Association, Chair

driven by County Policeman Billie
Bell. It seems that Mr. Browning
had dimmed his lights, but that the
lights on the other car had not been
dimmed, the wagon between the two
cars being invisible until Mr. Brown
ing car was right on it. Mr. Brown
ing made an attempt to throw his car
off the fill, but it struck the long
coupling pole, which extended from
the rear of the wagon, and carried
the wagon with the car, the car fall
ing on top of the wagon and its oc
cupants. The baby must have been
thrown from the wagon by its mother
in an attempt to save its life as it
was found on the road, all the others
being at the bottom of the fill.
The accident is a deplorable oc
curance, and was described as un
avoidable.
Mr. and Mrs. Mincey lived on the
Jake Pughsley place and besides the
small boy which is in the Vidalia Hos
pital, two other children are left.
| country, makes this statement doubly
. gratifying.
The statement shows that this fi
nancial institution is in excellent con
; dition, which fully auhorizes the con
! fidence of their depositors. In view
of he recent bank crashes over the
I state, due partly to the collapse of
j the Manley chain of banks the healthy
condition of the First National as is
shown by their statement will be
examined with assurance by citizens
; generally.
Not only does this statement of
■ the bank indicate the sound condi
tion o fthe bank, but it also shows
that general financial conditions in
the city and county are gradually
and substantially improving.
The bank is owned by local stock
holders and operated for the benefit
of our local people, being under the
same management and with the same
policies, since its organization, which
was sixteen years ago, paying in divi
dends since that time, $44,100.00.
