BOYS STAGE COMEBACK TO WIN
HAIR RAISER FROM HAZLE- j
HURST 27-24.
The basketball teams representing
th local High School more than broke i
the past week, winning four and
even on their games played during
losing three out of seven games play
ed. Just at this time both the girls’
and the boys’ teams have won as
many games as they have lost. The
boys have played fourteen games,
have won seven and have lost seven
and the girls have played eight and (
have won four and lost four. Taking !
I everything into consideration, a per- j
I centage of fifty per cent is not so bad |
for the two teams playing a difficult |
schedule.
On Tuesday of last week games
were played with Soperton in Soper
ton and a double-header was divided,
the girls winning 16-2 and the boys
losing 10-5. The girls’ games was
somewhat of a runaway for Vida
lia and our girls did some good wark 1
in winning easily. The boys seemed
to never get going and although at
times they got in some nice pass work
their shooting and general play the
game as a whole was ragged.
On the next afternoon, Wednesday
the boys’ team won a listless and un
interesting game from Collins 12-9.
Although the second team was used a I

|i ABOUT THE PROSPEROUS CITY OF t
| . Bill alia |
k, The feature news story of this section w
ijn is easily the story of the local development \
in the past year and while it is a practical ft
W imposibility to give a complete story of each $
separate piece of improvement, or to ana- 2
6 lyse the cause of the development, it will be 1]
$ interesting to each reader to know that the KJ
u tax assessors for last year found that fully h
d a quarter of a million dollars worth of new ,Vj
5 building had been accomplished within the jf
£ city limits during the year. (1
t This does not take account of the de- <?
jT velopment done by the city government it- if
j self which included extension of sewerage n
| system, light and water lines to new sec- &
g tions and the paving of eleven blocks of the
ij down town section. Neither has the growth g
7j incident to the new paving had time to Jg
ft reach any momentum, but the sales of prop-
F erty in the section which Ms been paved re- 7)
IT fleets the fact that values have risen in this K
3 section which will more than offset the cost J
h incident to the paving. $3
While very few actual transfers have \
been made since the completion of the pav- 4
u ing, the prices paid for these parcels, in
w every case was from 25 to fifty per cent U
ft more than than had been offered before the
paving was started. Asking prices for ft
jr property affected by the paving have ad- (F
ft vanced in most cases about forty per cent, 3
ft so it is reasonable to accent the fact that
§ values have actually been increased in the (r
£ business section as forty per cent by this
K one development. <3
$ Mr. J. F. Darby, who operates both saw jv
I c? mills and planing mills in this place, states n
j ft) that during the past eight months, ninety %
' U per cent of his sales have been made locally, f)
| £ which would indicate that the building pro- /?
: r gram started last year is still in momentum
ft and will probably continue until business ft
4 houses and housing space has been provided ft
ft for the needs of the city. ft
g Another reason for the city’s remarka
ft ble growth during the past few months may 2
I be attributed to the taking over by the Geor- ,7
lift gia Southern Power Company of the city £
j J?, power and light plant. The power company
i Si itself has accomplished an enormous amount (l
7j of development in this section, having built jj
P lines connecting this plant with the high ten- K
6 sion lines feeding into the city and built ft
/ lines from this place to Lyons, Mt. Vernon, 3
Jj Soperton and other towns in this section. Jj
% They have also remodelled and occupied a ft
iv\ store building from which they are doing a [ft
ft heavy merchandise business in electrical ft
Ift supplies and appliances, an several families ft
W have moved to Vidalia, whose connection is a
ft solely with the business done by the power ;
(p company. ft
Y Building news reported recently in- jjft!

system on Wertheim place, to be of suffic- $ !
ient scope to take care of this subdivision, Sj I
ft extension of water and power lines to the j

& Development experts agree that this ft [
? vear’s increase in taxable values will easily ft '
ft exceed the values added last year, and the W 1
recent purchases by the city goverAnent of 7
machinery designed to repair roads and to a J
ft sweep streets guarantees a clean street down ‘

Showers falling in this section this

plants alive. The rains will also be
beneficial to those wishing to do early
plowing, seasoning the land so that it
may be properly worked in sections
where it had become too hard and
dry for plowing.

According to County Agent Garn

consumed over two hundred thousand
dollars worth of timber in the past
three days. This is an alarming fig
ure, but is accepted as correct by
parties who have had occasion to go
about the county and look at the dam
age. It is said that in most cases
these fires are set either to burn off
gras for pasturage .or to burn off
turpentine woods so that hands «an
