Are You
“Toxic?”
It Is W clltThen, to L earn the Importance
of Good Elimination.
Functional inactivity of the
kidneys permits a retention of
waste poisons in the blood. Symp
toms of this toxic condition are a
dull, languid feeling, drowsy head
aches and, sometimes, toxic back
ache and dizziness. That the kidneys
are not functioning as they should is
often shown by scanty or burning
passage of secretions. Many readers
have learned the value of Doan’s
Pills, stimulant diuretic to the kid- I
neys, in this condition. Users every- j

SALE OF FEW CHIME
A new Amerlcan-mado pred; t

telephone.
A company In Michigan that
manufactures automobile horns
and radios has p- rfected a raw
chime which is so distinctly du'L-r
--ent In sound and cadence from
previous products that it v.as im
portant that the company’3 Lou
don rep- or. r.'ive should kto.v
exactly v’-.at it was lil;e. A letter
could no. properly describe it and
shipment of a .‘ample would have
taken too much time. According
ly, in this emergency the sales
manager called up the representa
tive in London, and the rich har
monious tones of the chime-horn
passed into the telephone receiver
and were heard in the London of
fice 4,000 miles away, with the re
sult that the London representa
tive at once had a clear idea of
just what the new horn was like
and was able to start his campaign
for its sale in England.
Rhode Island has approximately
the same number of telephones as
the combined cities of Bremen. Bir
mingham, Dublin, Marseilles and
Rome, although It has only about
one-fifth of the combined popula
tion of these five European cities.

I Hechnkal Defective Developed
by Telephone Laboratories
to Trap Criminals
Sherlock Ho'.mes has a new rival,
a mechanical detective which has
been developed by the engineers of
the Bell Telephone Laboratories and
manufactured by the Western Elec
tric Company.
This mechanical detective was ex
hibited for the first time a s a recent
meeting of the New York Electrical
Society when robbery was planned,
committed and solved, all within
the space of one hour and in the
presence of fully 1,000 witnesses.
Dr. A. P. Link, instructor in psy
chology at New York University,
was the ‘‘master mind’ who plotted
the crime. Three students were
chosen to commit the crime and,
in accordance with their instruc
tions, they went to a house and
took a *lO bill wh-n an armed
policeman suddenly appeared. The
students not having been notified
that the policeman was to be a
party to th-c plot, thus experienced
all the sensations of real robbers.
They were brought back to the
audience where Dr. Link gavo them
a third degree. By means of the
mechanical detective or electrical
stethoscope, the instrument devised
by the telephone engineers, the
heart beats of the students were
made as audible as the beating of
tomtoms, and by other apparatus
the action of the sweat glands in
the palms of the hands was shown
by the bickerings of a tiny light on
the wall. It was noticeable that
the two innocent defendants re
sponded quickly with a steady heart
beat, but that the third was de
tected instantly when the word
“policeman” was given.
