NOTES AND COMENTS.
Political agitation and strife are
not calculated to bring prosperity to
our country.
A town could abot t as well afford
to do without a school or church as a
newspaper.
The •‘commencement” season is
approaching, and many will rejeice
when it shall end.
Many wiH hare cause to wonder
wheae they are “at” before the next
presideliai .lection.
Newspapers, as well as men, gener
ally pass for what they are worth
and some ot them for even more.
The highest calling in the world is
that of a minister of the gospel; the
next is the school teacher: and the
next is the journalist.
Let us a'l quit ticking about what
wo know but little about, {attend
strictly to our own private business
and let the world wag.
If we kn* w the trials and sorrows
which others endure quietly and pa
tiently, we would have morn charity
and sympathy, and less envy and
jealousy.
Dr. Tinadge in one of his recent
prayers asked the Lord to forgive
congress for the evil they did, and
thanked Him because they had done
the country no more nurm.
There seems to be a hitch in the
pence negotiations .between Japan
and China, and the .Taps may find it
neccssaiy to whip the pig.tails some
more, which is an easy thin gto do.
Many are in favor tlie annexation
of Cuba to the United Slates, but i'
ts very evident that we already have
a laage surplus of the class of which
that island is principally composed.
Prince Bismark of Germany, says
that if all the happiness lie has ever
experienced were summed up, that il
would not amount to more than
twnty four hours, and yet how many
thousands have envied that disap
pc inted old man, whose fame is as
wide as the civilized world.
If the people would take more in
terest (n the material, moral, educa
tional and religeotis improvement of
the country and pay less attention to
paitisan politic- it would be better
for all.
The ..pinion of n private individual
in matters of political economy and
and in regard to the matter in which
the affairs of the government should
be condu-tod, may be very sound and
correct, but as it is difficult to make
those who are ill charge of such af
fairs adopt them, there is no use in
woi lying about such things.

An interesting programme w'H be

Now let the filends of the cause
rally to this movement, to the end
that the sale of intoxicating liquois

Lest T . 'day morning about four
o’clock the dear little infant of Mr.
Gresham Duckett passed from life
into eternal bliss. It suffered for
many days with whooping cough,
which 'esiilt'Hl in a severe attack of
pneumonia fever, from which it lin
gered and langc'shed for many
weary hours finally robbing it of all
its vital powers. The angel of death
knocked at the door of its heart and
It responded to the colli and its loving
spirit was carried heavenward
Though leaving a father and mother
with many relatives weeping after it,
there is one thought that comforts
them and that thought is. when the
gat of jasper and gold swings open
to welcome them in they can dwell
with it, forever.
