THE FATAL MESSAGE.
A stately ship her anchor weighed.
And unfurled her snowy sail,
And was driven on at a rapid speed.
By a heavy north-east gale.
Her cargo consisted of precious souls,
One, more so than the rest.
T’was a maiden fair who with trend}-
_ ing hands,
►
Pressed a letter to her breast.
The gallant ship sped on her course
Bound to the Cuban coast;
The captain was stationed at the wheel
And each man was at his post
The gale increasMl at ev.rv mile,
The billow grew mountain high,
And the blackened clouds grew black
or still,
And completely obscured tbe sky.
■But the ship sped bravely on her course
Though she quacked in every joint,
As she leaped and bounded in her
maddened flight,
■ Toward the coveted longed forpoint
But t i e she reached that distant shore
A cry rent the stormy air;
T\vas the cry of tbe lookout from the
mast to]> high,
And it meant that danger was near
111 a moment more t’was plain to all,
They stood agast and stared;
T’was a reef whose tinea tiing rocks
they saw,
That frightened them as they neaicd
The captain quickly reversed the wheel
* Tli* crew lo the halyards ran,
And they worked with a will that 'lid
ciedit to all,
They worked as only sailors can.
But they woikcd in vain for onward
rushed,
That ship with its human freight,
And the captain muttered beneath
hi* nreatb,
Too lute, too late, too late.
The ship stood still for a moment or
two,
As if to decide her fate;
Then shivering and tiemhl ng like a
fi ightene 1 deer,
Plunged on at a fauiful late.
{She crashed on the reef and parted in
two,
While the seething brine,
Swept over her decks from her 1 ow to
her stern,
And the rocks gored her water-line
Jump for the life-boats the captain
cried,
And the whole crew jumped as one
man,
And pushed their boats from the
stranded wrecl ,
Andjrowed for the* distant land.
But the noble girl was left on the deck
Of the doomed and fated ship,
And lifting her eyes to the huivens
above, •
A prayer parted her beautiful lips.
•hO merciful God to Thee 1 appeal,
In this my hour of need;
0 rescue* me please from this horrible
deatli.
Dear God of the Christian Creed.’’
A message have I for the chief of my
race,
Its contents will free them this day:
“0 grant me this favor Omnipotent
God,
That I might haste on my way.”
Then drying her eyes and looking
around,
Her gaze fell on a stout mast
That was balancing on the side rail
of the ship,
To ilp.i she hound herself fast.
“Then canting the mast they together

She hurried ashore her task to fulfill.
And she smiled on the da L r 'jo-'
past.
Then pushing her way through the
forest dense,
Tho’ the ground was uneven and
damp;
And her noble heart beat time to her
feet.
As she sighted the insurgent camp.
But while she sped with quickened
pace,
To reach the camp ere ni-ht,
The enemy scenting danger advanced
To the left and to the light.
And when within a hundred yards.
Of the insurgent camp she fell.
Pierced bv a hundred bullets,
While the rifles rang her knell.

Seven Months With Fever.
Wonderful Recovery of Health.
Ur. Baird’s rapid and marvelous recovery
from a mere skeleton to his normal weight,
270 pounds, was surely the fullest test of the
grandest strength-giving and building-up
medicine ever produced, namely:
Dr. Miles’ Restorative Nervine.
J. 11. Baird.
“Oentlemen —I wish to express to you my
gratitude for the great good that Dr.
Mile*' Nervine has done for me, I was
taken sick with typhoid fever and I laid
in bed for seven months. After getting
over the fever I was thin, nervous and tired,
and did not regain my lost strength. I tried
several proprietary medicines, and finally,
after having been reduced in weight to 130
pounds, 1 began trying your Nervine, and at
once began to improve. Was finally entirely
cured, and today X can say I never felt bet
ter in all my life, and weigh 270 pounds.
This is my normal woight, as 1 measure
6 feet 5 1 /* inches in height.”
