HOMER, GA„ JAN. 21, 1807.
The work ol the special committee
of investigation is done.
No impeachment proceedings will
be 'aken against Judge Seaborn Reese
and Judge Joel L. Sweat.
After two hours discussion of the
charges, behind closed doors, the
committee came to a decision shortly
after 5 o’clock Tuesday afternoon.
This decision coincided to the
letter with the forecast made in Sun
day s Constitution to the eftect.
“It can be stated with positive as
surance that the report of the comniii
tee concerning Judge Reese when it
comes will be exculpatory.’’
•‘lt can he also said with reference
to the charges against Judge Sw eat
that the committee will not report 'to
the bouse tha.i impeachment proceed
ings are necessary.”
“According to the admission of
Judge Sweat himself, they will n.ake
a finding that he was drunk at the St.
Simons btnquet. They will also find
in all probability, that his conduct at
Indian Spring was indiscreet and per.
haps improper, hut there will be no
report upon wbi< h'impenclimcnl pro
caedings can ba instituted,’
When the case of Judge Reese wan
taken up yesterday afternoon without
a moment's hesitation, without n din
senting voice to exonorate him, and
nil members of the committee joined
in the opinion that the charges
brought [against him were without
foundation.
Otherwise) with Judge Sweat.
While a fonnal resolution was passed
stating that sufficient evidence had
not been submitted to authorize a
lecomendaiion that articles of im
peachment be preferred, several
members of the committee asked to
be recorded as expressing their opin
ions that the action of the judge t
Indian Spring was indiscreet and
improper.
The vote on every [point brought
before the committee was unanimous.
V/bile the committee differed as to
their expression os the Jiniident at
Indian Spring, all were together upon
the different questions which came up
for ballot.

Within the Inst few weeks the 11a
vana newspapers have undergone a
radical change of sentiment.
Until recently these newspapers
have been extremely hostile in their
attitude toward the United States.
Cuban sympathizers in this country
have been abused in the most flagrant
manner, while the [charge has even
been made that Americans, in siding
with Cuba, have been actuated by no
other desire than to annex the island
to the United States.
While such a charge as this is too
ridiculous to arouse indignation, it
shows what monumental and malicious
liars the Spaniards are. From Gen
We y letdown to the ofliciai
of the government there has been a
perfect mania among the Spanish
authorities for perverting the truth.
In this respect, if in no other the
Cuban campaign is without a parallel
in modern warfare.
Since tho first of the year, however
the Spanish newspapers in Havana
have changed their tactics- Instead
of berating the United States for inter
termg with Spanish affairs, they are
cow extremely anxious for this conn
try to step in and adjust the difticul
tiesbetwecu Spain and Cuba. '

There is a strong probability that
a bill seeking to tax all church piop
erty in the state will be introduced
at the session of the Missouri legisla
ture soon after it gets down to busi
ness. For several yems past there
has been a reform organization in (St.
Louis which has sougbt to compel all
property held by them, and a bill em
bodying that idea now said to be al
most ready for submission to the tretr
n

THE PARADOX OF TIME*
Time goes, you say? All, no!
Al .is, Time slays—we go!
Or else, weie this not so.
What need t® chain the hours,
For youth were always ours?
Time g< ®s, you say?—ah no!
Ours is the eyes’ deceit
Of men whose flying feet
Lead through some landscape low;
We pass, and think we see
The earth’s fixed si race flee;
Alas, Time stays—we go!
Once, in the days of old,
Your locks wer® curling gold,
And mine had shamed the ciow.
Now, in the self-same stage,
We’ve reached the silver age;
Time goes, you say?—all no!
Once, when my voice was strong,
1 filled the woods with song
To praise your -‘rose” and “snow,’ JJJ
My bird, that sang, is dead;
Where are your rosesjlled?
Alas, Time stay*—we go!
Sic, in what traversed ways,
What backward fate delays
The hopes we need to know;
W here arc our old desires?
Ah! where those vanished fires?
Time goes, you gay?—ah, no!
How for, how far, O Sweet,
The pass behind our leet
Lies in the even 'glow!
Now, on the forward wav,
Let us fold hands and pray;
Alas, Time stays —we gt>!

one f'-> bill to the correspondent who
writes the best, oftenest. and most
desirable locals from bis or her local

waged to decide who the winner will j
be- In making the decision we will

of times you write, tho use of gram
mar, punctuation, etc.
What we want is regular corves !
pendents, and we will give you more
credit for regularity than any thing
