MRS. ALGERNON BLAIR
DIES IN BIRMINGHAM.
■ Mrs Caroline L. Blair, beloved
wife of Mr. Algernon Blair, died
yesterday morning at 10 o’clock at
the Tally and McAdory Infirmary
Birmingham, Ala., where she was
carried for treatment a few days ago.
The remains were brought to the
city last night and were conveyed
to the residence of Mrs. Blair’s
parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Single
ton, No. 617 First avenue. The
funeral will take place at 5 o’clock
this afternoon from Trinity church.
Mrs. Blair’s death is a truly sad
announcement to her many friends
in Columbus, her old home. She
and Mr. Blair moved from this city
to Montgomery two or three years
ago and have since resided in that
city. She has been in ill health for
some time, and recently it was found
necessary to take her to the Birming
ham infirmary above referred to, hut
her life could not be saved. Besides
her husband and parents, she is sur
vived by three small children, Par
nell, Elizabeth and Carolyn; one
brother, Mr. T. N. Singleton of At
lanta and three sisters, Mrs S. J.
VanDyke of Atlanta and Misses Ger
trude and Irene Singleton of this
city. She was about 26 years of age.
Mrs Blair was a member of the

OGEECHEE NEWS
Mr. John A. Oglesby, principal of
the Ilawkinsville High School, is
spending a few days with his sister,
Mrs. H. J. Parker.
Mr. B. Burns has recently install
ed a complete ginning system with of the
E. Van Winkle Gin Co,, gaso
line engine for pumping water.
Mr. Henry Mock, of that “ancient
country,” was an agreeable visitor in
our neighborhood last Sunday, eh,
Miss Edna?
Miss Ethel Parker, accompanied
by her grandmother, Mrs. Jones,
left last week for extended visit to
relatives in Alabama and the sadness
that has now enveloped the entire
person of several of our young men
is but a lame description of their
woeful appearance.
Miss Helen Skinner, the ellicient
assistant at Gilgal High School, af
ter spending several days with
friends in this section, left on the
11th, inst., for her home in Milledge
ville. The school at Gilgal will not
be opened again until late in the fall.
We would like to see the good
roads discussion kept up. The mat
ter of bonding the county to raise
money for the purpose of putting ev
ery public road in the county in
thorough repair is one of the most
important steps ever advocated in
Screven county. The present deplo
rable condition of the public high
ways is but the natural result of poli
cy now in use by those in , authority .
and it is causing widespread dis-sat
isfaction. Any plan tending to the
betterment of present conditions will
he favorably received. We want
something done and done right now
It is rather unpleasant to be making
a 2:40 clip and bumping into some
of the gullies of our roads be thrown
up five feet, more or less, and meet
a shower of mud as you descend.
Now if we are to have bonds, does
anybody know what amount will he
necessary, how long it will take to
realize on the bond issue and a com
plete plan for their redemption?
How is it proposed to raise the funds
for their redemption, at what per
cent, and whether hereafter all the
moneys necessary for paying these
bonds, interest, and maintaining the
roads will be raised by anadvaloruna
tax or commutation tax, or Loth,
which? What plan and system wrll
adopted for the use of this money on
the roads and particularly WHAT
ROADS WILL BE WORKED AND
WHEN? We wait for further in-
