PRAVELER REPLIES

r Editor :
It appears that Mr. Hilton
list have gotten over his seri
bness, as he has written a pret
lengthy article, or rather a
bly to Traveler, in your issue
the 12th. First, he says that
iveler say's he is sick at heart.

that is, the officials have done
their best, but what has gone
with our money. Now when we
will be called upon for another
$2.50 and got nothing for last
years $2.50. This section paid
over $150.00 last year and not a
lick struck. I, for one, know'
that under the old system we
would have had some work done
on this side of the county,
Mr. Hilton also says that we
cannot afford to sit and wait, but
let him remember that haste
makes waste, and a lot of us will
never see Kentucky, Tennessee
or Ohio, but if we did he says,,
would blush with shame when we
returned to Screven, as we would
see or compare our condition.The
mere sentiment fancy of hesita
ting to incur a debt to be practi
cally paid by the increase in the
value of our property. I can t
see it that way when there are so
many that have no real estate.
He goes on to say by the signifi
cance of a debt of the paltry
sum of $200,000.00 with fifty
years to pay it in at 4 per ceut.

is over and above double what we

Remember voters you are uot
released from the $2.50 either,
and some of you perhaps have as
many as three boys under twenty
one years old, and yet talk about
a paltry sum. But Mr. Hilton says
he would not mind being double
taxed to do this. But hold
awhile, lets see something about
that. He could readily make it,
for Mr. Rockefeller when he
wishes to make a little extra
change just goes up a little on
his oil, it hurts nobody much but
he makes or gets millions there
by; but look at the poor fellow
that belongs to some one else,
and rent to pay, there is a bad
crop year, and sir he has to sell
his corn that his wife and chil
dren need at 40 cents or perhaps
at 50 cents per bushel to pay ins
little tax as it may be termed,
then buy it back in the spring or
summer perhaps from the same
man to whom tie sold at $1.25 if
not $1.50 per bushel, or sell his
cotton seed that ought to go on his
corn or cotton for $10.00 or
$12.00 per ton then, pay $25.00
for guano or make nothing scarce-

ly. Then again there are poor
widow women who perhaps have
two or more boys for whom she
has to pay for when she can
hardly keep the wolf from her
door, has no land, therefore has
to rent and keep her boys from
school.
Mr. Hilton, in his reply to
Traveler, seems to want to make
it appear that Traveler does
not know much about what is
going on in the world. I suppose
he knows more than he wants to
know about a great, many things I
and not as much as he would j
like to know about a great many - j
others. 1 suppose he knows this, j
that if it is carried into effect he I
will have to bear it the best he
can, until God releases him and
takes him up on high.
