A Good Education.
Is the best capital parents can give
their children. It is an acquirement
that always stau Is ready to grasp the
practical issues of life and to eliminate
from thorn both success and material in
dependence. IFe refer, of course,to what
may be termed practical business educa
tion, as being absolutely essential to
both socjal and tinmciat position m the
world. To tins end all the youth of the
county should be practically educated.
They cau acquire the rudiment?, the su 1 -
stratum on which to build the more po
lite acquirements only iu the school
room, and under the training of expe
rienced, well qualified instructors. Our
town and county have good schools,
which should be liberally patronized.
At least, it parents should not be able to
give their children a classical, th y should
not neglect the more solid attainments ol
a rudimentary, education. Education,
brain power is now the passport to busi
ness success, no matter win*her one
strives in the field, the workshop, in
commerce or the professions. The peo
ple should think of these mutters, aid
not neglect the education of those de
pendent upon them tor a training.
The ; Sidewalks .
The attention ot our town council
should l>c directed to the very bad con
dition ot our sidewalks While il is true
that no work can be done on them a;
present, posts can be set so ns to keep
road wagons off the foot ways. The side
walks from Mnj Smith's to Judge Den
nis* are almost impassible by reason il
being run over bv vehicles of all kinds, 1
and considerable compliint is being
made by the citizens on that side of the
town.
Now that our new council lias been
installed into office, we trust that tin
people will not be disappointed in tin ir
expectations for needed reforms looking
to the com tort and convenience of pe
estrains. Several Joot bridges in the co
operate limits are badly in ned ot re
pairs. We do not call attention to the
above in any spirit of censure, but f r
the purpose ot having the evils rendered
a as early a date us practicable.
Literary Sociables.
The Talbottou Literary Society, Mr P
K Dennis. Jr, l’resid nt, met at the res s
deuce of Capt W E Ragland, lust
Friday night. After calling the
mooting to order, the Secretary.
Mr E L Kimbrough, react the of
the last meeting and the .Society
ed to business. A vacancy having oc
curred m the vice-presidency by reason
of the removal of Miss Mamie Breedlove,
on a close boilot Miss Lula Daniel was
elected to fill the vacancy, Mr 13 R Wa>
then rend a selection for the Society.
These meetings, both in their nocial|and
literary amenities,arc quite entertaining,
and are growing iu general lavor with
the young people. Misses Dollio Downs
and Katie Leonard, Messrs. C 1.l U Yokes
and James A Foster were appointed for
ti t utxl readers.
Oar School .
The catalogue of LeVert College and
Colliusworth Institute for bSKO shows a
total attendance of 114 pupils from Tal
bot and surrounding counties. These
schools should receive the earnest co
ol e ration of the people of this section,
offering as they do unusual facilities tor
the education of boys and girls. The
curriculum of the schools lias been uni
fied, so as to embrace the same line <1
studies. The text books us* and nr*- 1 the
most progiessivt* and approved, and pu
pil# will not fail to advance under the
exact amt simplified metho Is <t Profs,
lb-vant and McLaughlin. K *ud to either
of these gentlemen for catalogue. Spring
term tor noth schools opened on the 13ui
instant.
Town Finances.
From the report of Mr J .) Bull, oh rk
of council for 183d, we observe ti it the
Jotal receipts of tlio town from taxes,
1 icons -s, fines. See. toot up* $727 .Id lis -
burs* nn nts the same amount, loss $lO 07
cash balance on h *Dd.
For the year there were 70 arrests and
and trios, 44 fines, 11 dismissed on pay
ment of costs aggregate fines $157 45.
The finance committee, composed of
K L Bard well, J il Worn 11 >iud T C Bel
yen, submitted a satistnctory report on
the book* ot the <’iork and Treasur* r.
Admitted to Practice.
On WedmsTay lart, Mr R D Lock© ih
ColurnhiM was admitted to the practice
of law In this Stat* . on motion of Hon W
A Little, who presented Mr Locke • cert -
ficate of admission to the bar of the ci. -
cult cour. ot A labam i, together with his
license to practice before the Superior
Court ol that State. Mr Locke is an
educated gentleman, a forcible and elo
quent speaker, and will no doubt attain
high honors iu the legal profus ion.
Marriage Record.
Judge Bichard H Leonard, our Ordi
nary, tor the month of December issued
forty-two license*. Eight for whites and
thirty-four for colored people. Far
January twenty-one permits to be made
happy were issued, five for whites and
sixteen for colored. From this it will bo
seeH that notwithstanding the disagree*
ble nature of the weather, people do not !
forget to put themselves in sympathy
with the tender dialogue between Ingo
mar and Parthenu.
Snow A rain.
Snow oomoitnoed tailing in this place
on Sunday night last and continued
through Monday. It lay about three
inches on the ground. Nearly every
body i* out of wood, ana the roads are in
sich condition as to interfere seriously
with supplies in that lino. This is cer
tainly the hardest winter in the memory
of the eldest inhabitant. On Monday
morning the mercary marked only 31
degrees.
