Four choice peach trees and one apple

the same fate. This was something new ;
to me. and the oldest persons with whom
I have conversed on the subject ngeee
with me, that it is new. As to the cause
of this state of things, I decided that it
was the effect of freezing the soft tissue
between the bars and the hard wood.
This span is known in Botany ns the
cambium Dyer. It is composed of dolß
cate cells growing, or forming even in
the winter season—and I can very easily
see tlmt moisture, enough can be found
there to freeze, expand and rupture the
bark. lam a great admirer ot orchards,

is any known plan to prevent this calami,
ty - also to call their attention to their

11 \V G , writes from Now Y >rk ro the
Constitution: Dr Cary, fist' commission
er of Georgia. writes me an inleie>ting
letter ab ut the carp-fisheries in that
State, One year ago last fall lie distri
buted seven hundred carp through ;
Georgia, stocking about thirty pounds.
Last year he stocked about ono hundred
ponds in Georgia.scattered lrom Dahlom*-
ga to Savannah. The interest in c.rp has
increased enormously just now. Every
mad brings applications for fish, and l)r
Cary is satisfied that live hundred ponds
are being prepared and will be ready for
carp next tail. If those can be stocked
there will be about one thonsan 1 ponds
in the Stale properly stocked with carp,
tour hundred of which will be old ponds
I think that Dr Cary will find 1,000 r.ew
ponds reapy tor fish in the commg fall
To meet tuis demand is important. The
government ponds at Washington were
swept away in the UvaVut of last week,
and the carp scattered, but the Baltimore
government ponds have a largo supply,
Dr Cary thinks that the carp put m
Georgia ponds in 1879 will spawn this
spring, without a doubt. It so he will
be able to supply all Georgia demands.
He is going to establish Stat • hatching
ponds during the present ye; r. from
which he will get ali the fish that can be
needed.
Tho results of tho growth m the fish in
Georgia ponds, sis reporto l by Dr
Cary astounds every one here. The
ichthyologists declare that it is alino t
incredible that any fish 'GYY grow as those
carp have grown in Georgia. Dr Cary
writes; On the 20ih of November, 1879,
I deposited in a Marietta pou 1 carp
weighing half an ounce apiece. Ou the
21st of November, 1881, just one year
later, carp were taken from thu pond
weighing ever four pounds. Two speci
mens just one year old were taken from
a Macon pond m ’a c uiv l 2 and 24 inches
respectively. Specimens taken from a
Dougherty county pond exceeded in
weight and size either of these. Many
similar cases were reported an l tho esti
mute ot Dr ilcssell that carp 111 the South
would equal four pounds a year. Put 2d
small carp in a pon / tins fall. One year
from the spring they will spawn uud
give at h ast 5,000 small carp that are
healthy an l will grow -more probably
29,000. But sly 5,009. At four pouuls
of growth each they will give 20 000
pounds of the nest meat in 11 ye.r, at no
expense or trouble. Wh.it Georgian will
then hare to go out and hunt a ground
hog ?
The T.ilbotton Itnilroad-
This enterprise, the piido of too peo

three miles of track completed.
Tho work is being done in a very sub
