Too Much Cotton.
Cotton is a curse to any people who
depend entirely upon its produc iou lor j
their maintenance. It is the ruin of any
farmer who depends upon it entirely to
keep hi* plantation going. Every man
who has tried it lias gone down under
mortgages, remorseless, but just. To
day in South West Georgia hundreds
aii 1 bundled* of farmers are running
hither and thither in search ot someone
who will advance them supplies to run
their farms another year, and the papers
down there, tell us, ther cairt be accom
modated. What a state of affairs, to be
sure ! Before the war, not one farmer iu
a hundred had to buy corn, and with
cotton ut seven cent- a pound, he was
able to go to the January and February
sales by sheriffs and buy from thrse to
ten able bodied young negro men, tor
twelve or fifteen hundred dollars apiece.
Now, whal a difference ! And why ?
Answer cotton, and credit, and extrava
gance.
A Pablu Library.
Now that Talbotton is improving in
very many ways, it is pertinent to ask.
why we can t have a public library. A
Library Association should at once be
organized, it would be an easy matter
to convert the Literary Club into an as
sociation ot tins character.Wo doubt not
that tin h i p-oper condition* the library
ot the Jacksonian Literary Society, at Le-
Vert C- Jlt-ge, could be secured, nud this
would constitute n nucleus from winch
could be built up, with well directed effort
a most flouiislmig organization to hccoiae
a permanent fixture of the town. It is
worth an ffort. The best talent and co
operation of the town can be secured, as
it is a matter in which nil alike are in
terested. We would be pleased to see
the malt r take shape nud crystal iz*‘ into
an enterprise which would at once be
the pride and bo .*v of oil citizens.
