Suggestions to Farmers.
Commissioner Henderson makes the
following timely suggestions to farmers
who use commercial manures:
Farmers are advised not to buy any
fertilizer, or chemical for compounding
or composting the sum 0 , unless it has
both the manufacturer's guaranteed
analysis and the Inspector's tag upon or
.Attached to it—and all farmers arc re
quested to inform the Com mis non or of
Agriculture of any case where a fertilizer
is sold or offered for sale without having
both the guaranteed analysis and the
Inspector’s tag attached-
Any farmer who desires to do so, can
save a fair sample ot any inspected urand
of fertilizer which he purchases, ami
have it analyzed at the Department Lab
oratory, if the following conditions are
com plied with:
1. The sample should be taken b fore
any ot the fertilizer is distributed —a
small quantity from each package of the
same brand—or, if a large quantity is
purchased from a sufficient number < f
packages to tairly represent the whole
lot.
2. Then very thoroughly mix (.but in t
grind or triturate• these small quanti
ties taken from different packages, and
from t e mixture fill a common quinine
bottle, cio-ely cork, an 1 seal it with
wax
3. Attach a label to the bottle, showing
the correct name ot the brand, the name
of the manufacturer, tue guaranteed an
alysis taken fjoiu the puckages), and
the name of the dealer from w iota t ©
fertilizer was purcuased. Also a t toil to
the bottle one of the inspector's tags
found applied io the fertilizer.
4 Let the above be don© in the pres- ,
ence of witnesses, and the sample be*pla
oed in the hands ot a disinterested party !
for sale keeping until wanted.
Then, after the crop is wade, it the
tanner has reason to believe the fertilizer !
was not such us it was represented to be,
let the sample be sent to this Depart
ment, either by the hand ot some relia
ble disinterested party, or by express,
prepaid, and it will be analyzed without
charge.
Willoughby Roade.
A Luge and cultured audience assem
bled on Thursday night last, to hear
Prof Willoughby*Reade lecture. In the
aosv.ncu ot a more convenient hall the ele
gant and commodious dining room ot the
Thornton llous*was fitted up uml all made
comfortable. His recitations ranged “from
grave to gay, from lively to severe, and
delighted everybody present. Ilia char
acterizations are fully up to the best
standards, his facial versatility, his gro
tesque personations, bin natural and ele
gant rendition all i npressed themselves
upon his audience and at onoa stamped
Prof Beads as a master of elocution Ti e
entertainment throughout was first class,
bigrhly instructive and intensely nter
taining.
Pi of Head o‘s manner of reading is at
once natural, forceful and graceful, his
eunoiafion well nigh faultless, Ins lutir
protation of the author's thoughts such us
to make one feel he is listening to the
oracle himself behind the printed page-
Phe author finds clear and well modula
ted expression through the speaker,while
the subject matter under treatment,
whether grave or gay, finds a ready ue
ceptance in the minds at his audience.
Un Friday nignt, in Prof Bea le's ren
dition of Poe's Raven, this forceful por
traiture of the author's* very words and
gloomy fancies was most natural, the er
ratic poet seemed speaking face to face
with us, while the wierd an t fantastic
ir.apery of his imagination seemed -trug*
I glmg hs of very chanty to conceal the
longings nnd doubts of i.u tioubled
spirit.
Other recitations w-r well received
nud elicited appreciative Appl iUSe. Prof
Reade will always be welcomed to Tab
hot ton.
By request Prof Raade gave another
entertainment on Fri l iy m ht to n Urge
an 1 well pie .a-* l audience. With th*.
elegant appoint men t of the Thornton
Id oiho and the generous treatment of
M; i.ornton both evenings passed off
quite plfi.iK.mtly. Prof Ueade is delight
e 1 with our town and is unqualified in
is compliments of the Thornton House
