Let's enjoy every good thing that happens and be thankful. Rejoice in Ihe piesentgood, lor we know not wbat the future may be, Ido abominate this way most people have of hankering afier something they have'nt got, and the more they have'ut got n thing the worse they want it. They are always dealing in ‘futures. 1 and when the future cornea they can't, realize. Why not deal in ‘shorts and bo content with small margins. When a man or a woman or anybody else gets tip in the morning they ought to bo happy for the ‘git up,‘ and because thoy are not sick, and if they have got a goott sort of breakfast and a dtp of clear coffee they onght to bo happy for that. Mow this here slop cof fee like you got at country hotels don't justify anybody iu feeling hap py or grateful—so I excuse 'em. But if a man gets up reasonably well and has a] reasonable break fast, there is no reason why he shouldn't bo reasonably happy all that day—that is, unless his wife is sick. Of course, if his wife is sick he is bound to bo miserable. It's bis d,.ty—it‘s expected of him. I wish people would get in a habit of enjoying tho present, and let the in ture look out for itself. Enjoy evory day—we can't afford to bo cheated out of nil hour. Wtftt a splendid day wns Saturday when we were boys, what a good, long, happy day, wo were allowed to frolic, and w e went fishing, or seining, or hunt ing, or picking chinquepins, or top. ping trees for chestnuts, or 'getting muskedines, or walnuts, or dewber ries, or may pops, or watermelons, and we were so gay and happy. I've never been as happy since, though my grown up pleasures may have been a little more refined. Temperance- Tlio Kansas temperance execu tive c nnmitleo have issued an ad dress congratulating tho people of the Stale upon the progress of the temperance oauso. They say: “By the votes of her citizens, by the de cision of her supremo couri, and by the action ol her legislature, Kan sas lias declared herself forever free from all partnership in the traffic of intoxicating liq.i >rs. and now leads the world in the effort to sup press by constitutional law the great scourge of the nations. On ly by a prompt and vigorous eu -1 rcement of the laws can we have a right to lioll the p >st of honor in the great warfare with intemper ance. The passage of tho amend ment has been followed by tho en actment of a law that is stringent in its provisions. It is noteworthy that this law passed the legislature hy r a large majority. The vote in the senate was thirty-two to seven, and iu tue house 100 to tweuiy three, thus giving a majority iu both houses ol more than four to one. ♦ Right and Loft- It ought to be a pmt of the exer cises in every well regiilated .School > especially of colleges where calee thenics are daily performed,to learn children liow tc use the left hand with equal expertness as Iho right. All persons are liable to accidents by which the right arm may be die abled lor mouths, and even for life, and if the left was ready to do its work us well as the right, much time and inconvenience might be saved. Then, again, it may appear a small mutter to some but it really is an important one: Before silver forks came to bo used so commonly us they now are, it was not thought improper to eat at the table with the knife, and only tho right hand was employed, but now .the left holds tho fork and tho food is eaten with it. Very few people can use the folk in the left hand gracefully, and it is boorish to put dowu your knife uud change the fork to the right hand. Let our children be early taught to Use tho lett hand auibi -dexterously. Senator Brown a Leader- New York Trbiuno. It is sad to see Senator Brown preferring the pleasures of sin for a season—or, in other words choos ing rather to he the leader of the democratic side of the senate than take his place in the movement for the political regeneration of the South, where he naturally belongs. But it is something to have a lively democrat in the United Stales sen ate, and Mr Brown fulfills that function. Ilia democratic coilea, gnes as a n.le have a strong reaera* blance, intellectually, to wax works. A man who is as true as steel posiessing an iron will, some g*>ld, and a fair proportion of brass, should be able to endure the hard ware of the world. Wise and Otherwise- Tunis, the garden of Africa, was last week formally annexed to A1 geria, which is far from fertile. The two combined will constitute a pros perous colony, and prove perhaps the beginning of a French empire on the south sido of the Mediter ranean. Dr Henry Hull, a prominent citi zen ol Athens, Ga., died there May 10, nged 83 years. At one timo he was a professor in tho University of Georgia, A gentleman who moved to Ala bama carried a Cow with him; said cow returned to Oobb county the other day, u distance of ninety miles. Prohibition and “fence" or “no fence' 1 are exciting considerable in terest throughout tho State at pres, ent. The Young Men's Christian asso ciations of Georgia will hold a con vention in Atlanta about June 9 h- Tho United States has moie miles of telegraph lino than any other country in the worid —170," 103,comprising about 300,000 miles of wire—not including lines used exclusively for railroad business. Russia is tho second nation on tho globe in Ibis respect, having 56,- 100 mileH, Gormany 41,431, France 30,070 and Great Britain 33,150. It is remarked that President Garfield's Cabinet is the first one since tho war which has not cons tained u soldier. A mechanic ill Schofuld's Irou Works at Macon, claims to have discovered, and applied anew mo tive power, which will supercede sturiu. A law has boon passed in Swi z er'aad forbidiliDg boys under fif teen years of age to smoke either in the streets or at home. Time and Tide are the namos of a couple of lowa girls. Of course they will wait for no man. There are about 17,000 locomo tives running on the rniirondsof tho United States, and 500,000 cars of all kinds. Money does everything for a Rian, said an old gentleman, pom pously. “Yes," replied the other man, “but money won't do as much for a man as some rnon will do tor money." “When I was a young man," says the philosopher Billings, I wag always in a hurry to to hold the big end of tho log and do all the lifting, now I am older I seize hold of the small end and do all tho grunting. At a alone quarry in the east the stone are loosened by means of electricity from a large battery. What next ? Jay Gould's income is said to bo $6,000,000 per annum. The Romo Courier says: “We have heard since the decision of the Supreme Court on the Bunk of Rome caso that tho assets ol the bank will lack SIO,OOO paying the State's prior lien, uud that the de positors will be assessed to make up this deficiency. ‘‘ The Post-Appeal thinks there is a “bank ring" in Georgia formed to get hold of the and use without interest as much of the St ,te mon ey as possible. And not only that, but to encourage tho levying ol un necessarily heavy taxes to order to have large surplusaes in these de positories. Immigrants are pouring into the country through New York at tho rate of 18,000 a week. The, money they bring averagos SIOO each. The Philadelphia Weekly Mag. axino for Saturday, March 3, 1798, has tho following remarkable death notice: At Now London (Con necticut), Mr John Weeks. aged 114. As nearly all the ready cash had been removed before be arrived, he ooly got $30,000.
