Tlio divinity of charity consists in relieving a man's needs bifore the are forced upon us. Tho slii'hte.st sorrow for sin is snflieient if it produce amendment; tho greatest is insufficient if it does not. ?lie highest perfection of human reason is to know that tliero is an infinity of truth beyond its reach. There are some persons on whom their faults sit well, and others who are made ungraceful by their good ness. ' Ho who makes a great fuss about doing good will do very little; ho who does good only to bo. noticed will not do it long. The greater the difficulty the more glory in surmounting it. Address American Book .Kxchange, 7U4 Broadway, New York & Sad History- A history almost as sad and ro mantic as that of Romeo and Ju liet is attached to Green Mount, the well-known cemetery at Balti more, Mil, Tim property was onco owned by John Oliver, a wealthy English merchant, ilis only child, a beautiful girl of 20, was loved by a young man whose only utfitness to become her hus band lay in the fact that a personal feud existed between him and the girl's stern father. They met clandestinely and planed an elope ment, The father found it out, and gave orders to his servants to patrol tho grounds by night and shoot all trespassers, Disgustod in man's clothing, the girl at tempted to escape, aufl was shot dead at the gate. Grief-stricken, her father erected a mausoleum upon the spot, and deedc 1 the entire property to tli) city for a cemetery, A County Without a Dram shop. The inhabitants of Edward coun ty, Illinois, do not support any temperance lecturers,or spend their lime talking about temperance. They decided twenty-five years ago that no liquor should bo sold in the county, and since that liino they have sent but one person to the penitentiary, and he committed a crime while drunk on whiskey pro cared in an adjoining county; they support but two or three paupers, and their jail is empty most of the time. Their taxes are thirty -two per cent lower than the adjoining counties, and their terms of court occupy but three days in a year, while their tax rolls show that they return more property than any oth er counly in the State ol equal pop ulation. This is a case where the minori ty cannot complain of any invasion of private rights, for the people aro unanimously opposed to license under any circumstances. Fami lies seek the loc-lity as a good place to bring up children. When confronted with statistics of a mod el couniy, even old topers admit there is something in it; bat it evi dently is not whiskey.—Golden Rule. Wise and Otherwise. An Englishman asked a Cincin nati bulla if there was math refine ment in that oily, and she replied, “You just, hot. your boots we're a cultured crowd 1“ The proportion of foreigners in the total population of this countiy i;i in 7. Is this the Adam's House? asked a stranger of a Bostonian. Yes, was tho reply, “it's Adam's House until you got to the roof—then it's eaves. The greatest crop raised uud r slavery was that of but it animated to only 4,823,770 bales, or about 1,(500,000 loss than the quantity pro bleed last year* Mr John M Tucker relates the following: Several nights ago on a portion of bis plantation there was a shower of rain. .Next morning acres of Ids land were covered with what is known as spring lizzarda. There were bushels of them all around, and covered the ground so thick that the negroes could hardly find a clear spot on which to eat their breakfast. By noon they were all dead. A cheap fertilizer were those lizzarda —Milledgovillo Union and Recorder. The cotton crop last year was by far the largest over gathered in the S utli, A considerable quantity of it still remains on tio plantations, and it is therefore impossible to givo in exact figures tho number of bales produced. The most careful esti mates, however, put tho total at over (1,400,000 halos, or uoarly a mtlli n aud a hall bales more than the splendid crop of T 871). A dispatch from Dallas, Toxas says that tho wheat harvest lias be gun in that section, and that the quality is bet ter than at any time during the past twelve years, Tho yield will average 18 bushels to the acre. Tho j. respects of all tho crops are good but the general acreage will be smaller than last year on ac count of the scarcity of labor. It will now ho possible to satisfactori ly determine whether Mars is in habited- With the Professor's ma chine a woman in Mars might be heard callinu her f.mrteen-year-old son down to breakfast half an hour before holiojl timo. The instru ment might not he sensitive enough to convoy the sound of her lirst call, because she doesn't elevate her voice very altitudiaously; but the fourteenth shriek for ‘John Ilen-r-r K HE!' would nearly knock the safety valve off it. —Griffln News. Careless boys and girls make careless men and women, For out of boyhood and girlhood ccme man hood and womanhood.
