THE REGISTER AND STANDARD. TALBOTTON. TALBOT COUNTY, GEORGIA, JUNE 7 1881
The Talbotton Railroad.
In company with a party of stockhol
ders, and Superintendent W II Martin,
we made the run to Bostick and return
on last Wednesday, tor the purpose ot
inspecting the geuetal condition of the
road. Since the completion of track lav
ing one month since Mr Martin has had
done a great deal of very important work.
In places where the fill-ins were too
scant, large quantities of dirt have been
added, rendering the track much more
solid and compact in all its parts. Sev
eral cuts have been widened, while oth
ers are now undergoing the same pro
cess. A large amount of surfacing and
levelling have been done and is still in
progress on every part of tlio roadbed
not already perfected.
Tfie riding over the rails was solid and
easy as on the heaviest steel bars. Mr.
[ Martin has had quite a substantial bridge
structure put in at the creek, one mile
' and a half from town, while the timbers
are now being prepared for a temporary
lreight house at Bostick. Advantage
will be taken of the dry summer weather I
to perfect the widening of all cuts on j
the road, aud to otherwise place the road i
bed in perfect condition. The inspec
tion ot the road be l was quite j
satisfactory over tlio entire lino aud
Supt. Martin deserves much credit *or

work has been pushed.

For readiug iu wuich ther*s money, wo
refer the people to tiio announcement ot
those liberal and clever dealers, Messrs*
Bludchard & Booth, i'23 Broad Street,
Columbus. The present Boding prices
for all classes ot dry goods, fresh, fusli
iouable.aud desirable,amount to the great
est sacrifice ever known. It is positively
like giving away goods to ge* them at
! Hiich astonishingly low tiguros. Just
j thiuk ot it, $10,003 worth of gtine dress
i goods are being closed out at 50 cents on
the dollar. Their immense trade doe 8
j not indicate hard times, for it is a fact
worthy of note that the people always
have money to buy bargains. See ad

ou the morning that followed to boo the

i feet full ot leaves, occasionally pocking
j away at them, like a spoilt c'dld picking

j ally covered with the sweet manna. We
did not hear weather Mr O'Neal suved

can go out and boast that this is a land ot

for the above, and are not quite sure that
it has in it enough honey to make it

House Burned
On Friday morning last the large and
elegant two story residence of Mrs S A

burned. It seems that Mrs Carter had
been burning sweepings in an up stairs
fireplace, hud left the fire, and thought
nothing more of it until the roof of the
house was discovered to bo on fire. It
is thought that some of the dry stuff in
the sweepings was earned up the chimney
flue,-tand fouDd lodgement iu the dry
shingles which it quickly ignited. We
did not hear whether anything was saved.
