One of the probabilities in the
not distant tutuce >s that the south
Atlantic staler will ultimately be
fo'Ced to give up the culture of cot
ton a- a great paying crop. Accord
iug to the htest siatisties many
counties in Georgia do not product*
cotton in greater proportion than
four, live and six acres for one bale.
The culture of the great staple wi !
be driven by the wearing out of
the lands in the older southern
states to the Mississpipi valley aud
the country west of it.

The discovery of a portable elec
tric force has caused a great flutter
among the aeronauts. Some of
them believe that here is discov
ered the Jmeans that shall make
ballooning not only a fine art, but
an eve.y.day undertaking. It is
believed that if a balloon cn caruy
with it in portable bhape a reserve
force such as Sir William Thomp
son found in the famous box sent
him from Paris, bidloons can be
fitted up witli steering apparatus
that will enable the aeronaut to
control their passage thiough the
air and go whithersoever he will,
