Tha Signs of the Weather.
[Bob Burdette.]
It is an easy matter enough to
forecast the weather like Professor
Tice atul Mr Vennor, if people will
only give their mirds to it. By
closely reading and studying the
predictions of these great wo*ther
breeders, wo havo deducted tho
following rules, by which they make
all their forecasts' Hiud casts
of the weather are not mado until
the next day.
An intensely blue skv indicates a
temporary absence of clouds. Un
der other circumstances, again, an
intensely blew sky indicates a tor
nado.
When a woman leaves a piece oj
soap on the stairs where her hus
band will tread upon it, it is a dead
sure sign of u storm.
When the sun rises behind a
bank of clouds, and the cloud hangs
low all around the horizon, and all
over tho sky, and the air feels damp,
and there is a drizzling mist blow
ing, the indications are there wilt be
a raiu somewhere iu the United
States or Canada.
When it begins to thunder look
out for liglituing.
When a man gets up iu tho night
and feels along the top pantry shelf
in the dark, and knocks tho big
square bo'tie without tiny label
down to the floor and breaks it, it
is a sign there is going to be a dry
spell until seven or eight o'clock in
tho morning.
When the spring millinery open
ings are advortisod look for bright
sunny weather all around tho house,
with treacherous cnltnß and rising
barometer, indicative of sudden
tempests and mean temperature.
When the cradle begins to vi
brate with irregular, spasmodic mo
tions about one o'clock in the
morning look out for the signals
and try to remember where you
put the paregoric the 1 .s', time you
used it.
When the youngest hoy in tho
family comes home three hours af.

and his shirt wrong sido out, look
out for a spanking breeze,
Equivalent to a Chinese
Wall.
Atl mta Post Appeal.]
To maintain the- present Rail
way Commission system is equiva
lent to building a Chinese wall
a out the State to keep out rail
roads and other improvement en
terprises, Capital has as croud a
right to expect that the State will
take control of it if put into cotton
factories as in railroads. It will
foil that all that is needed is tho
li iwl of tho demagogue to cause
tho Legislature to puss laws assum
ing for the State control of any
branch of enterprise. There is a
p unt beyond which laws should
nit go. They should never place
private fortunes under tho control
of tho Stato. The right of a per
ron to the control of his own prop
erty is a sacred one aud should
never he interfered with by the
legislature. This is a good reason
for opposition to the railroad Com
mission law and when taken in
connection with the fact that com
petition, and not law, should reg
ulate them, there would seem no
ground left for the law to stand ou.
Dooley’s Claim.
Baltimore Bun.]
A cotton picker has been the
great want in the c otton-producing
sections of the South, amt now Mr
II P Dooley, of Forest City, Arkan
sas. claims, after having workod ut
it four y< ars, to hav succeeded in
inventing the desired machine
Mr Dooley says that one man and
two horses are all the help needed
for his picker; the driver sacks and
throws the cotton overboard as the
machine goes from turn to turn.
The machine can be used as soon
as enough cotton is open to justify
running it, and so on until all the
cottton Is open the picker will pick
eight acres of cotton a day, whilst it
can be built for SIOO. In the pick
ing all the dust, trash and dirt is
shaken off. If the merits c aimed
for the picker are realized Mr Dio.
ley has conferred an inestimable
boon on the cotton planters by bis
invention, whilst its success would
insure him a fortuue.
What has become of the bill for the reg
istration of the voters of Georgia? Before
the legislature met the press of the Stite
spoke ont with unanimity, and demanded
of their represent itives in the legislature*
in the name of the people, its enactment.
What av.= t ey done about it? What are
they going to do about it? The intelli
gence, the virtue aid conservatism of
Georgia patient y await an answer to
these questions.
