Oi-tuwa Free IVess, Mr. E iward Piiiiee, splint-manu facturer of Horseshoe Hay, Buck, inghuin township, is authority for the statement that there are twen ty two match manufactories in the United States and Canada, and that the daily production—and con sequently daily consumption—is about twenty-five thousand gross per day. It may seem a queer statement to tuxlte that one hun dred thousand hours of eacli suc cessive day are spent by the people of the two countries in striking light, but such is undoubtedly the case. Iu each gross of matches manufactured there are 144 boxes, so that tho 25,000 gross produces 3,000,000 boxes. Each box, at least, those made in tho states, nltero a duty of one cent upon ev ery box is bvied—contaius 100 matches, so that tho number of mulches produced and used daily amounts to 360,000,000. Count, ing that it takes a second te light each tuutch —aud it is questionable whether it can be dono in less time than that, while some men occupy several minutes sometimes in try ing to strike a light, parthnlarly when boozy—to light tho 360,000,- 000 would take just that utunber of seconds. This gives 6,000,000 minutes, or 100,000 hoars. Iu days of 24 hours each it figures up to 4,166 2-3, and gives eleven years and five months, with a couple of days extra, as the time occupied during every 24 hours by the peo ple of North America, not figur ing on tho Mexicans—in striking matches. Figuring a little fur ther, It gives 4,150 years' lime in each year. 7he fact play seem nmazing, but it is undoubtedly quite correct. An Incident- The death of Mrs Millard Fill more serves to recall a singular in cident connected with her two hus bands. In 1847, while she was the wife of Hon Ezekiel Mclntosh, of Albany, Mr Fillmore was a candi date for the position of State comp troller of New York, Some per son who desired to defeat his elec tion, raised about $20,000 for the purpose and placed it in a bank in his own name, and not to make tho matter public. He did as desired but before the fund could be drawn ot/t to use for election purposes the ; treasurer fell sick and died. Mr Fillmore was elected comptroller and many years afterward married M;r Mclntosh, atrd received as part of the dowry, the money that had been raised to defeat big election. The ex-Preaident used to enjoy telling the story, and often remark ed that ’'the money was placed where it would do the most good" to him. All Sorts- PitjiW belting ia used with sneer's; in them lohiaery fall of au e.viiibitatio i now open lit Japan. It is stated that beltiti!; ma le of paper hns tasted and found to be oven stronger th.-.u 'that nude of loa'tlier. Mr Postmaster- General J into; has, up to the present time, sttyed by rjiseoutin uiug boat aud star muilcontraets, $1,381, 4P>- /Thirty years ago it cost Massa chusetts 84 81 to educateoxch child; now it coats sl3-65. It was his first appatreuea at church, ftud, in order that ho might sit perfectly still and keep his little chatter between his teet he was told that a lit-, and : would bite him if he didn't keep silent. This tittle fellow cist several glances up aud down tbtasile, and at last, just at tho most interesting part of the sermon, startled the congregation by piping out, "Mamma, when is tho dog?" Although Franco has the general reputation of being a very immoral country, yet a marriage under tho French laws cannot bo annulled, Switzerland, on the contrary, is credited with all the virtues, aud yet in that country, as well as in Belgium, divorces are permitted by mutual consent. The official majority in North Carolina against prohibition is one hundred and sixteen thousand one hundred and fif y-six. It is reported that Jay Gould controls 52,000 miles of railroad, or over half the mileage of the United States, Whether this be true or not, he undoubtedly owns more miles than any other tnau iu tho world. The blue and tho gray will bo well mixed at the rmim m of the army of tho Cumberland, at Chatta nooga next month. Among the expected participants are Gens, Grants, Sheridan, Roseciwns, John son, Qordon, Wheeler, Colquitt. Hampton aDd Sherman, Eighty-Nind Miles- This is said to bo the length of the new railroad now being built be tween Atlanta and Micon. Tills laid wi h steel rails already pur chased will give a track sadly run over by modern engines in three hours. This, wo understand, is the con .emplated schedule and it may posrlb'y be reduced -o loss time. It >s slid iho President and Mrs Garfield will refuse the sum raised for the latter. What a rebuke to Grant if they should. Bui, it will be entirely thrown aw y ou him. About the only effect it wili have on him will be to cause him to say, “what a fool G-rfield is.“ The fund amount at present to $155,000. We hope fo the honor of the Pres ident as well as of the min it will be declined. There is a growing feeling in this country that money is tno equivalent of everything, nd that the tenderest and noblest of human emotions and feelings can bo measured by it. This is au ex tremely gros and sordid view, h i there ate many people who enter tain it, and they should be enlight ened. • ♦- -♦ G.iiteau the other day attracted the attention of bi guard in some way and when he went into the cell to investigate matters rushed upon him and attempted to cut his throat with a knife he had in some way got possession ot. The gourd was reinforced and the prisoner disarmed. It is not known what object the pitson.-r hid in this at tempted assassination, but one theory is that he had heard that the Piesvi lont was worse, and think ing he might die he thought to thus confirm his alleged Insanity.
