Tho Number Thirteen-
KichmontJ Dispatch.
It is related by a gentleman of
this city, who was well acquainted
with Mrs Bernard, that on the 13-,h
anniversary of her marriage she
gave a dinner party, and that at
table it so happened there were 13
persons present, and 'ho fact made
an unpleasant impression upon her,
and recalled the old superstition.
On the 13th of a month she signed
a contract which was one of the
most unfortunate business transac
tions of her life, and by which she
lost about $60,000. She was sick
exactly 13 days, and died at the
closo of 13th day of January.
Superstitious people will dwell
upon these coincidences (whether
or not the report about them be
correct,) bnt practical porsons will
not fail to draw a lesson from Mrs
Bernard's unhappy death from
smail-pox; and that is, that her
gre .t misfortune was that she either
refused or neglected to be vaccina
ted.
A New London Lamp was able
to get enough to eat, stick as it
w.i", and lie slept comfoi lably in
barm; but ho was puzzled ho-.v to
get anew suit of clothes without
working for them. At length ho
bit on an idea ct slipping into a
small-pox pest house and spending
enhoor there. This he did with
out tear, as ho had long boon pitted
oy the dißCssn. The authorities
had to born his rags and so k? got
the dcsiml new outfit.

ot life, a matter of evolution. It is
inseparable from business and it is
well understood that tho journal

Newspapers become so only when
they liavo earned and maintained a
character for enterprise and relia

which are openly charged with
‘managing to furnish tho lato news,
about four woeks after tlio country
weeklies have published it,“
Six weeks after tha death of Mr
Gilbert Thompson's wife, in New
York city, in 1801, ho locked his
wife’s sister, Miss Barker, in a
room, and called God to witnej-s
that he loved her, would cherish
her till death did them part, and
more of tha same kind. He said
he couldn't marry her on account
ol his mother's opposition, but fr >m
that time he proceeded to live with
her as his vifo, and continued this
for mrny years. All tho time he
held himself out to tho world as
a widower, and two months ago ho
died leaving a vast fortune. Now
.Miss Barker puts in an appearance,
and, telling this story, asks a wife's
dower. The court is somewhat
puzzled, but proposes to g ; ve Miss
I>. a eh-uice, and if she can make it
appear that ho actually regarded
her as hD wife, as she says ho did,
will divide tho fortune with her.
