If it were true that the planters receiv
ed ilie fall price for the lies, the plmfers
you 1,1 still lose the difference between
the naiiiral and artificial price of the ties,
measured in the piico ol cotton. Dot iu
I etthe Tclegiuph is utterly wroug. The
price o.' cotton it. New V’oik is adjusted to
tl,e|nee in Liverpool, and tle price in
Liverpool is adjusted so as to cover wlist
the buyers would lose if they really j
paid for iron ties as so much cotton.
The losses on the ties are put on the
growers in the south, and the more
they pay for the ties the greater is
their loss.
.•Palter” in Houston Homo Journal.
To whom do they sell ? There is
not an intelligent buyer or spinner in
any market who will say that he buys
bagging and ties at the price of cot
ton, The planter is not required to
take the money from his pocket and
pay for the bagging and ties, but the
imyer pays a fraction less per pound
for the cotton because the bagging
and ties are on it, just as he pays I ss
lor it because the freight from this
point to another must Ire | aid. Liver
pool deducts for tare, and all the
markets of the world conform. In
some Georgia markets the buyer pays
all warehouse charges, and seemingly
the planter pays n thing, but the buy
er would readily pay a fractional
higher price for the cotton if the
charges were shifted to the other par
ty. The result would be the same.
In either case the cotton pays its own
expenses and in every case the cbtion
pays for tare. Planters do not sell
cotton ties at a profit whatever Pig
iron Kelley’s fresh d< sciples in Geor
gia may say.

That the muon sentiment at the
south is overwhelming is evident
from facts which cannot be quest
ioned. The old confederate soldier
and his influence is on Iho side of
nnion, Thitold element of the
people which, under the compro
mise leaders of 1852, and which uf
terward, under Douglas and Bell
m ICCO, gavea majotily of southern
votes lor the union, are more deter
mined than of old to Mand by the
republic as at present constituted.
These elements alone would Com
mand a large majority of the south
ern whiles, but to these must be
added the new and young blood of
the south, the men of a later gener
ation, who are ri.-ing up ns rulers
and law givers. These men have
no revenges to nurse, to disap
pointments to enrage, and uo am
bitious which cannot receive within
the union atul under tbo old flig a
broader and brighter glory than
could ever be won iu the restricted
field of a miniature repub ic.
