Chicago Farmers 1 Review.
Taking the whjle population to-
Retlier, white ami black, nnilo and
female, old and young, rich and
p lor, a less proportion uf the pop
ulation worn, whether in the fields
or out of them, than in any civilized
country under the sun. The whites
don't woiK because oi the still him
ding lorce of former traditions, mid
because of a try ing climate, which
makes field labor exhausting. The
blacks and m't work because they cau
not be disciplined as formerly, and
because, having been differentiated
for centuries to a tropic >1 climate,
they can not he made to under
stand the necessity of continual la
bor v.hen it is opposite to their in
clinations. White women don't
woik because white men dm't, and
because of the existence of a public
8 ntimeut which holds them above
the necessity of labor even more
than the men, csphcially if they be
long to the educated classes. But
even if, while men an I women did
not wot K, and did not leijui; e to be
waited on by the blacks to an ex
tent nortlu ni people have little c n
cepticii of, the case would not be so
bad. But there uio so many whites
who not only <lo no worlv, but are
at the same time waited on by the
blacks, that not only is the propor
tion of noil-workers increased, hut
the colored lid i hands are demor
alized by the numbers of
their brethren who lead easy
menial lives and enjoy the leisure of
towns.

4 In Houston, (ia., not long ago, a
company of young folks met to en
u game of whist. There was occa
sion for one of the young women to
remark that she would never marry
a man like Ooar Wilde that’ he
should fall l t (oo esthetic depth of
wearing his hair ala horse-t ail-
Her interlocutor bantered the fair
Georgian to marry him, and as
much to his surprise as to that of
the company, she accented the
offer. The party of the first part
was rather elated thsn crestfallen,
however, because the party of the
second part happened to be as wise
as she was witty and as rich in
purse as she was rare in personal
attractions. C.ir.ls was wore aban
doned; a courier was sent with
quick heels for a marriagi license;
a judge was summoned as witness,
a clergyman was hauled fr. m his
study; and with a quickness tint, al
most took away the bride's breath,
she found herself a wife. As the
betrothal tooK place at 10 o’clock
and the marriage at 11, one hour
only was consumed. In this ro
mantic way Miss Maybelle Clara,
daughter of Judge Clara, of Amer
icas, was wedded to Tlenry L San
dlin, a worthy and well-to-do mer
chant of Houston county.

advantage. They never told how he
abused them and told them of their
meanness; but the ladies told every
every word he said, so far as they
could remember. The burden of his

the devil and the devil hated them.
He told them they were the great
