THE AUIJUKSS
Of the Democrat Executive sub

weebj is an appeal to every derm *

standard of Mr Stephens, as the
regular nominee of tlie party.'While
expressing some surprise at the in
difference and apatliy manifested
by the anti-Stephens men, it urges
them to forego their personal pref
ferenccs and support the nominee |
It recites the dangers likely to ac- !
erne to the social, political mid
commercial interests of the State
by the restoration to political influ
ence of the coalition Democrats, or
independents.
It is a slroDg document, and
should be heeded by the Deraccra

t c voters of the Stale But while
we agre in the counsels advised,we
are not prepared to accept the in.
forenco conveyed, that the anti l
Stephens men have formed a coali
tion with the Independents and
Republicans, Many of the truest
democrats in the State were oppos
ed to Mr Stephens and themaunei
iu which he was placed in noraimt- j

Agricultural Society.
The County Agricultural Society
met at the Court House on Tuesday
last, President D. J. Carreker in (he
chair, Aft'*r the reading and confir
mation of the minutes ol the fast meet
ing, the subject for discussion, Hay
and the Forage crops, was announ
ced.
Mr. TANARUS, Stephenson gave account
of anew spee'es of clover, called the
Florida clover, of which he had about
260 plants- It grows spontaneously
in Middle and Southern Alalia, a,
where it is greatly esteemed as a f> r
age plant, all kinds of stocks preferring
it to other grasses. It requires only
one seeding, but to renew it, it is nec
essary each spring to plow up the land
on which it grows. Like vetches it is a
climber and is dehiscent in its sealing
We doubt not it will become quite
popular with our people as i forage
plant.
Dr W. K, Neal's observations on
Bermuda grass were in keeping with
those of advanced agriculturists, in
that it is valuable, not only for all
kinds of stock, but as a reclaimer of
wasted or worn out lands. On bot
tom kinds it won’d be more remuner
ative in cows, hogs, sheep and other
stock than if the same land were plant*
ed in corn. The Doctor very properly
thinks that Bermuda is tco little es
teemed by the people of this section,
and would be glad to see more atten
tion paid its culture.
Judge D. J. Carreker, in very lucid
and practical views agreed with I>r
Neal as to the virtues of Bermuda,
and its efficacy in reclaiming worn
out lands.
Col. J, F. Little, whose views are
always practical, claimed for Bermuda
a merit not touched upon by other I
speakers, that it was invaluable as a j
fertilizer. Luids growing this grass;
soon become rich, the decaying roots j
at the end of the first year rendering 1
the soil loose and porous.
Dr. \V. R. Neal placed compara
tively little value on our native water ;
or swamp grasses, crab and other up
land grasses possessing more nutritious j
properties.
As to the curing of fodder the
members advanced different views.
The chief difficulty in saving fodder is
where the Kind confines the blades.
The band should either be tied loosely
or placed atound the stalk and con
fined by a blade or two left on the
stalk unpulled. It was thought advis
able, as far as it should be found prac
! ticable to tike up fodder the same
! day it is pulled.
! Question for debate at next meet
j ing "Day Libor.”
