TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 191882.
Official Organ of Talbot County.
Independentism-
Senator lames L. Pngli.
Imle])endentism is nothing but the
most slavish individual subserviency
to the opposing j arty. Ninety-nine
per cent ot independent candidates
have belonged to some organized par
ty, which they abandoned for the sole
reason that the organized party has
defeated their personal aspirations and
promises no future gratification of
their vanity and ambition. This class
exists everywhere. Men aspire to
position, and when they discover that
an organized party keeps them out of
office they resort to independentism
and cry out against machine and boss
rule. I have now no recollection of
any independent candidate who ever
returned to the party he abandoned.
The universal history is that indepen
dent candidates always get as far off
from the parry they left as possible by
landing in the most extreme portion
of the opposite party. The most re
liable and extreme member of the re
publican party is Senator Mahone.
He lias never within my recollection
failed to vote with the republicans on
every party question.
I told the reporter that all indepen
dentism was founded solely on the
hope of office, and depended for suc
cess on the use of money and patron
age, and that such movements and
agencies were short lived and could
never make any impression on the
honest white people of the south ; that
the South had rescued itself from ru
in by the power of organization, and
believed in organized men anti organ
ized parties ; that 1 had more respect
for an organized republican than 1 lu.d
for an independent democrat.
Wo see it stated that thero are
0,000,000 miles of fence in the Uni
ted Slates, tho coat of which bus
been ..bout §0 ' S mile, or more
tiiau $2,000,00u,000. In 1877,
when all the fences were of woo '
the cost of repairing them wa
alone $78,(120,000. Now they ate
largely biult ot wire, and in 1881
00,000 miles of such fence w ere
built at s cost ot $10,000,000, or
about half the oott of the old wood
fences.
It will lie seen the total cotton crop
(or 18.81 reaches 5,435,845 bales,
while the exports are 3,595,031 itales,
and the spinners' takings are i,6t3i,-
206 bales, leaving a stock on hand at
the close of the year of 120,722 bales.
Railroad building and railroad busi
ness last year was unprecedented in
the Southern States. About 1,500
miles of roatl were put in operation,
which is nearly 1,000 more than were
built during the year before. The
gross earnings of Southern railroads
last year reached $63,000,000. 111
1880 they amounted to $48,000,000,
and in 1879 to $43,000,000.
r l*he coming report of Mi Commis
sioner Henderson, of the Georgia Ag
ricuUnral Bureau, will show a falling
off in the cotton prospects, and an im
proved condition of all other eroj>s.
Ccrn, potatoes, sugar cane, peas tur
nips, etc. The late storm will modify
the estimates somewhat in some local
ities, but not materially, we trust.
Twc men have been found who are
making money at farming. They are
Messrs Davenport and Powell of Bow
el's Mill Ga. According to the Con
stitution they have made upward of
540,000 this year on a grain farm of
30,000 acres.
