TUESDAY NOVEMBER 14, '.*&!■
Official Orfan of Talbot County.
A Falsi Alarm.
.Itis a little strange that, in tie
Cce of 62,000 majority for Governor
Stephens, and the recent election of
ten solid democratic congressmen
from Georgia, some papers in the
state should continue to cry out ‘ ring
rule,” “Loss rule” and all that sort of
stuff. This is done for quite a visible
purpose, say to defeat Governor Col
quitt for the Semite. Hut we imagine
the guis'* is thin enough for anybody
to see through. This class of warfare
is certainly unbecoming any journ; 1
that claims to float the democratic
uanner, to say nothing of the encour
agement aff .r led to democratic oppo
sition, in whatever phase it may be
presented.
If a public man is to be discussed
it should he done from the stand
]Hiint of his public acts and and ings,
his private character, in the meantime,
being his own persona! property and
exempt from public criticism. Nor is
it nec"ssary to bring in personalism in
a campaign, where only live issues en
gage the people.
This cry of “bossisnr” in Georgia is
all bosh. No such thing can exist in
the face of such a solidity and una
nimity as have been shown in the re
cent elections throughout the state. The
truth is, the people have learned to
vote for themselves, and have too
much con:crvative political sense to
be led astray from the fold by the
braying ol a few recalcitrants and dis
affected soreheads. The great sense
of the people is always light. The
popular expression among a people
like ours, will generally indicate the
correct course to be pursued At any
rate, if the people are fooled, they
themselves are the footers, and 110 boss,
or ring can say, ‘‘l did it.”
Tho Democratic Wave
Sweeps the State.
The Columbus Enquirer Snn says :
Georgia sends a solid democratic del* j
egation. In every district except the
t.iird and eighth there was opposition I
to the regular democratic nominee?.!
the contest was more heated in the j
seventh and ninth districts than any
other in the state, the returns of which
will lie found below. r l he congress
men elected are : Hardeman, from
the state at large ; Nicholls, from the
fust district; Turner, the second;
Crisp, the third ; Ihiclunan, fourth ;
Hammond, the fifth; Blount, the
sixth ; Clements, the seventh ; Ree ,e,
the eight; and Chandler, from the
ninth district.
THE FOURTH DISTRICT.
Muscogee e mnty gives litu hftnan
78, and Hardeman 634 majority,
Harris county—Buchanan, 339,
and Hardeman, 354 majority.
Talbot county —Buchanan, 209,
Hardeman, 3to majority.
Buchanan's majority in Chattahoo
chee, 97.
Majority for Buchanan in Marion
county, 140.
THE SEVENTH DISTRICT.
Judson A Clements, the nominee,
received r,730 majority in the 7th
district, over Fe ton, Independent.
Milton A Candler, nominee in the
9th district, received 2,078 majority,
over Sjteer independent. This lea\ es
but a few counties yet to hear from.

Ihe Result in Ge rgta.
The recent t lection in this state has
demonstrated the fact that the repub
lican party has lost the complete con
trol of the colored vote. It is true
that four-fifths of the votes polled for
the republicans in the congressional
election were cast by colored voters,
but the small vote shows their indiffer
encc. The colored iran is not easily
handled by the present method; which
is to distribute money among the lead
ers and expect the coioied men to fol
low these leaders. Jf money is to be
used to control their vote they natu
ra'ly expect to get some of it, and
when they fail to get it they will not
take the interest in these elections
that the paid lcaoer- exp. ct them to
take.
The republican party has inangura
ted a scheme in their political cam
paigns that is calculated to corrupt the
voters. They openly and publicly col
| left a fund from t e office holders,
to be us and for the purpose of keeping
their party in power. When the par
ty managers take this money and di
vide it among drunken Un ted States
deputy marshals and expect these men
to make the colored vote solid fc r
their party, they will be disappointed
and ought .to be. Another thing is
apparent —the right of suffrage is r.ot
as new to the negro as it was a lew
years bach, and they have been g t
ting wisdom.fast on the Imc that it is
not absolutely necessary (or them to
vote the republican ticket fotever,
they are learning that their old friend
are better friend to them than the
new ones, who enfranchise i them sim
ply to get their help.—Constitution.
