I* e sill nia.e if pleasant and profitable and shov them how cheap goods can be bought In Xalbo ton sep.o TALBOTTON, GA., TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1882. i The South in the North. New Oilcans Tinu-s-Democral. The exhibition of the New England Manufacturers’ end Mechanics’ insti tute, which has been open in lJoston for more than a month, dem jnstrates the high position the south is already occupying in the industrial world. Next to New England, the southern states make the best and largest ex hibit in this fair. Nearly every one is represented, whereas only four western states make any displays. It is evident that the New England manufacturers are earnestly endeavor ing to attract the southern custom and win the commercial friendship of this section. Mr Atkinson's speech open ing the fair turned ma nly on the south and southern interests, and he showed that there was more natural wealth mineral and forest, in this section of the country than any other, needing only capital to develop it. Keeping Still in Church- A lady now visiting at River Park is the mother of seven small children, all of whom are exceptionally bright. One of these, a four year old hoy, showed great reluctance to attend church and was constatly in disgrace when there. His mother tried every means to induce him to sit still in vain, until at last the little fellow saiil: “Mamma, there’s just one way you can keep me still in church.” “What is that," asked his mamma, eagerly. “Just let me take off my shoes and stockings so I can wiggle my toes and I’ll keep as still as a mice !”—Detroit Post. General Sir Garnet Wolseley, thong,i he would lie too old for one of Napoleon's marshals, is unprecedently young for an English commander-in chief. 1 lis youth indeed, is visible in his face, his voice, and in every move ment of his spare, active frame. His clear, blue eyes and healthy, fresh face seem to refute the power of his gray hair, which lie wears closely crop ped, in military fashion. The general is, anil always has been, a great smo ker, chiefly of cigarettes. He consid ers tobacco the best possible restora tive after prolonged mental o.' phys ical exertions. On occasions when he has had to keep awake and alert for hours he has found tobacco more ef fectual than coffee, and has smoked all night long. I'm Tail of Com m s.—Astrono mer. arc not agreed as to the compo sition of the comets, or the cause of the tail being curved in an oppesite direction from the sun. We know that the earth, through the effects of evaporation and other causes, is t > some extent an electrified body. Comets arc thought by some to be electrified in a much higher degree. The sun is known lo exert an influ ence upon terrestrial magnetism. Vio lent comm tions upon its surface have been coincident with unusual distur bances of the magnetic needle. Sim ilarly electrified bodies repel each other. One theory in regard to the tails of comets is that they aro com posed of the smallest anil outermost atoms or molecules of the comet, driv en off in a direction opposite to the sun by electrical repulsion. The Eclipse ok 1883. —The great astronomical event for 1883 will be the solar eclipse on the 6th of May, the total ty of which will last six min utes. Unfortunately the line of totality lies out at sea, the only land crossed by it being Carol nc Island, a coral reef discovered by Narcs, the Arctic explorer, in 1874, in ten degrees south latitude, and longitude 140 degrees west. The line extends “from a point about two hundred miles back of the eastjeoast of Australia, northeastwardly, to nine degrees south latitude, 130 degn es west longitude ; thence to ward the coast of South America, ter minating alxmt five hundred miles from the coast." It m now the correct thing at tony weddings to hire SIO,OOO worth of bonds to exhibit ns the gift of the bride's father—and for a small cum, with acceptable room fill! of handsome gold and silver pfes euts can be rented. Pretty soon a man of average wealth can give bis daughter a one hundred thoueaftd wedding at a cost of SSO, The world move,; despite Bsotber Jus. per’s assert ions te the contrary, —— ■■■ Tho North Georgia Citizen gives expression to (be following- as we think, correct opinions: ‘lteduro as tar as you can the amount of fencing or. your farm and pot that which is neceary in good substan til order. Buckles in Place of Buttons. The ladies will do well this sea son to look up their heirlooms iu tlio sluipo of fancy buckles and clasps as eruumonts of this descrip tion are exceedingly lu.diiontiblc. Buckles, both little and large, of gold, siior, jet poirl or bronze, are worn upon the dross, often in plain ol buttons. An imported coslumo of mahogany red, sntin and plush, exhibited this week, was fastened down tho ontiro from ami upon the backsot tho coat, sioevos with buck les and straps exactly resembling those which fasten a skate. Some weeks ago we read an at tempt at suicide in Paris by a man who had driven a small dagger to the depth of nearly four inches through the top of the skull into the brain. Powerful machinery had to lie brought into use to remove it. The man then walked some distance to a hospital, where he remained a few days, though suffering neither from pain nor fever, and finally resumed his regular occu pation The story read like a sensa tional report, and we didn’t care to publish it as it seemed hard' to be lieve. We now find it in the London Lancet and cannot doubt its authenj ticity. T>y general consent the day : s sup posed to begin in longitude 180 de grees from Greenwich, the meridian of which crosses the Pacific ocean. The only known land upon this line where a man could stand in the northeastern corner of Asia and two or three little islands. By looking at a terrestrial globe you will readily perceive that the point where the day begins must depend entirely upon what prime me ridian is chosen. If we say it is twite noon when the sun crosses the merid ian of Washington, then the day be gan on a line running nearly through the centre of Asia. —New York Sun Omittbd tiik Salt/T Alton,~-Th charming Mmr, V. *t the cots' changes her dreuses three or four times a day.
