THE MODERN AE3OP.
From the Denver Tribune.
A peecocious boy was once Afflict
ed with a Boil in that part of his Anat
omy which is seldom mentioned in
Polite society. To him a Playmate
addressed Words of Condolence.
“Oh,’’replied the Precocious boy, “I’m
not so Powerful bad off, After all. This
Boil has taught me in its Quiet, unob
trusive way, what mantel-pieces were
made for, as you yourself shall Learn
if you will Stay and See me Eat my
Supper.” This fable teaches that All
created things have their Spheres to
Fill in this Life.
A Dog and his tail fell into a Dis
pute as to which should wag the other.
An itinerant wasp passing that way
casually remarked : “Spe .king of tails
reminds me that I Possess one which
may possibly be Influential enough to
wag you both.” This fable teaches
that io cents worth of dynamite is a
bigger man than a Church Steeple.
A men who had been drinking went
home J .ate one Night and hung his
hat and cane upon his breath instead
of upon the hat Rack. The hat rack
being of a naturally Sensitive disposi
tion, began to chide the man. “Pray
be calm, said the man, “What lam
doing is Intended Simply as an inti
mation to you that 1 am Fuller than a
Coal.” This fable teaches us that
haste frequently Leads to misinterpret
the motives of Others.
An Angle Worm was once Observed
by a Catfish wriggling about in a pond.
"Poor dear thing,” said the catfish,
“My heart bleeds for you. For fear
you will be drowned, I will take in out
of the wet,” To which the Angle
worm replyed: “1 am Grateful for
your Sympathy, but if you take me iu
it will be your Gills that will Bleed for
me.” Misinterpreting this remark for
humor, the catfish swallowed the An
gle worm and learned too late that the
Angle worm had previously Swallowed
a Limerick hook. By this Fable we
are taught that it is best to Inquire into
a contract before Undertaking it.
An editor once Owned three hun
dred thousand dollars worth of Rail
road stock, twenty-one thousand dol
lar Government bonds, six white Shirts
a country Residence on the Hudson,
farm in Illinois, a Span of horses and a
wagon, two suits of clothes and a Plug
hat. 'This Fable teaches that all the
Liars are Not dead Yet.
He Wanted to Pose.
From ih Detroit Free I’rcns.
A rest debt ot Bark street had a
photographer come up the other
day for the purpose ol taking a view
ol his residence, and the man of Iho
camera had jusigot in position when
along came an old coon witli a buck
imw on his arm and wanted to kuow
what was up.
“Going to photogr iph the house,“
was tiie reply.
‘ Then I guess I'll pose," remark
ed the old man, “I'll take a position
at the left ot the gate and represet t
the statuo of Industry. 1 '
The members of ihe lainily c*m
out and arranged lliemsolvca, aud
the man called out:
' Here old man, you want to get
out of thall"
‘‘Can’t I represent industry?”
‘•No, sir!"
“Can't I stand over there and rep
sent Laziness?"
‘‘No sir! We don't want you in
the group ut alk‘ ’
“Lemme represent the Steeping
Beauty. 1 ’
“You go away !“
Hu drew off to one sido, the pass
ing teams halted to give the artist a
chance, and directly the plate was
made. Everybody rushed forward
when it wat ready for inspection,
and the old man was one of the first.
As the pi .to was held up ite giggled
and tickled, and finally burst into a
loud laugh. He had dodged around
the corner of the house, and bia lull
figure was revealed behind the
fajnily.
■‘What do you repicssnt iD that
attitude?* 1 sternly inquired the pho
tographer.
“Well, I reoon tbnt'a a pretty
good pose lor Couteutment."
“Very well. I will now represent
Distatisfacl.ion.“
And tho artist took the festive
old chap by the oar and walked him
out of the crowd and pat, in a couple
of kieks which changed tho pose of
Contentment, to that of Sorrow.
What the Twins were Named-
From the Texas Siftings.]
“So you have got twins at your
house?” said Mrs Bezumbe to little
Tommy Samuelson.
"Yes, mam, two of ’em.”
“What arc you going to call them ?”
“Thunder and Lightning.”
“Why are strange names to
i. ill children.”
Well, that’s what pa called them
as soon as he heard they were in the
house,”
A New Kind.
From the Detroit Free Press.
We were having a long wait at a
j railroad junction in Georgia when an
! old darkey turned up with a basket of
boiled eggs and sandwiches, When
he had passed around through the
crowd he winked me to step aside,
and as we sat down on some boxes in
the freight House, lie began ;
I reckon you’s from tie norf?
Yes.
Well, sah, I wanted to ax how many
kinds ot religun you had up dat way.
Oh, about a dozen, I guess.
Cracky, golly ! lie hvhispeted, but
dat lets me out! Say !
Yes.
We hasn’t got but two kinds down
yere—Baptist an’ Methodist. 'Cord
in’ to dc Baptist Ize got to forgive de
nigger who stole all my hay las’ week,
an' ’cordin' to de Methodist l can’t
lick de onery rascal who tied my ole
mulf in de scrub an’ lett him to starve
to death.
And you want anew kind ?
’Zactly, sah—'zactly. I want sum
tliin’ dat’ll answer fust rate doorin’ a
thunder storm to keep de roof on de
ole cabin, an’ which wi 1 arterwards let
me cotch and wallop old Adams de
fust time lie menshuns dat I went to jail
fur thirty days fur habin’ one calf too
much.
1 gave him one, and he was so well
plea.ed that lie wanted to present me
with thirty-one boiled eggs and ten
poends of sandwiches.
M. C. Turner, Savannah, Ga., says;

A distinguished physician, one
who had spout much time utjlquar
antino, s till that a person whoso
head was thoroughly washed every
day rarely took contagions diseases;
but where the hair was allowed to
become dirty and matted, it was
hardly possible to escape infection.
Many persons find speedy relief for
nervous lieailuoiio by washing the
hair thoroughly in weak soda water.
I have known severe cases almost
wholly sored iu leu minutes by this
simplo remedy, A friend finds it
the gr -atest relief iu cases of rare
cold, flic cold symptoms entire!,
loaving the eyes and m so after one
thorough washing ot the hair. The
head Should bo thoroughly dried
afterward, and not exposed to
draughts of air for a little while.
RAILROaD RATES
All-nt, Constitution.
Tho recent and; cision of the Illinois
supreme court altirming the right of
aStalo to regulate passenger and
freight lates beyond its limits, will,
if confirmed by the Uoi'.ed States
supremo court, revolutionize freights
nnd fares throughout the country.
The decision wasri iidered in a cao
in which freight going out of the
Stato was involved. The freight
was carried 100 mil3 in the State
and 800 in other Slates. The coart
held ihat Illinois could regulate the
rate to the point of destination—at
least to the extent of preventing
discrimination—and that the States
outside of Illinois, through which
the freight was carried had no voice
iu the matter. Tho Illinois court, in
otther words, decided that the Slate
from which freight starts can say at
what, rate it shall be carried, no
matter how distant its destination
may be. The law at the point ot
departure is the law of ihe Whole
carriage, and tho importing State
must consult the rules and rates of
the exporting State.
It is Probable.
When yon see a young man with his
neck encased in a choice satin 'ker*
chief, that his best girl remembered
him on Christmas.
That somebody's stocking tvds
stretched by t.iat elegant sealskin gar
ment so numerous on the streets just
now.
When the pi evading scarf-pin and
Watch seals go out of fashion, Santa
Claus will come to the front as usual.
That sufficient time has elapsed
since the youngsters received their
dolls and toys to develop a destruct
iveness truly American.
When you look back that you will
take more comtort in contemplating
what you gave than inspecting that
which you received.
