V iA'iT.lb AVII THIS FAKJfBIt.
The relation existing between capi
tal and agriculture, is referable, in a
larger or smaller degree, to the eco
nomic considerations that enter into
the operations of cither. Capital is
the executive expression of labor, in
someone, or all of its diversified
forms ; and how we employ this analy
sis of all values, whether economically
and judiciously, or in open violation of
correct business proceedure, is a ,jues-
tion for us to determine.
As capital, or money, affects the
farmer, and through him the farming
interest, in a very material way, it
should occur to the thoughtful and
prudent agriculturist that there is a
better way to adjust his relationships
with money, than the arbitrary and op
pressive system at present in vogue
throughout the cotton states. Wheth
er the fanner’s needs in the money line
be small, or great, the products raised j
on the farm should at least be conape- 1
tent to discharge the debts, if it lie for
supplies, and to yield a support for the
next year’s operations. If the
borrowed capital is employed to dis
charge past indebtedness, the cost of
such capital should not be excessive,
and the time for which it is employed
be sufficient to enable the borrower
to meet his current liabilities, and ct
the end of the time to pay up his
loan.
The underlying question that effects
eo mmunities is, that of interest on the
borrowed capital they employ. This
is a matter that should engage the at
tention of every farmer, for it is dear
ly suicidal, in a financial way, for a
person to undertake any business when
he either does not know the cost o*
the capital he Is using, or uses such
capital when he knows that the busi
ness he is engaged in will not make
over and above the cost of production,
the profit charged. And right at this
juncture lies the danger line, beyond
which ruin and bankruptcy hold their
continual court. Hut, the farmer will
say, “perhaps 1 cannot avoid the on
erous exactions placed upon me by
men who know my necessities." Per
haps he may, if he has managing ca
pacity enough to attend to his own af
fairs. At least, a long step in advance
will be made when he fully realizes the
artificial and arbitrary system under
which he has been operating, and sets
about bettering his condition by em
ploying cheaper capital in the shape
of ready money, which he can secure
by using his farm lands as a basis for
security. And it is better for the far
mer to pursue this plan, because he is
simply using again a portion of the
capital he has already invested in lands.
The ready money may l>e obtained
through this process, and a little en
quiry will demonstrate that the capi
tal thus obtained is incomparably
cheaper than any other phase money
may take in the commercial usages of
this country.
