A Letter from the Priuce of Cotton Planters—F. C. Fur man- Mr. Fnmtan's most marvelous suc cess as a cotton planter—producing 8o bales on 65 acres besides making several hundred bushels of corn and oais—created no little stir among our larmers: ome weeks ago, and, in order to present his plan To our readers in full, the senior editor of the Journal addressed Mr. Furman a letter a few days since asking him to give his mo dus operandi in detail. Mim-Edgevi.u.e, Ga # ,Oct.ai, ‘B2. Mr. Geo, W. Chkeves.t- Dear blu Yours ot tha 26th inst. o hand. I can tell yon how I apply my manure, but remeraber-that a sys tem of culture that suits one descrip tion of soil, may not h<? practicable and effective on another. My nni.ure, or compost, suits all soils. I cannot say as much, however, for my system of culture. My land is a light sandy land with a clay 'sub-soil. I commen ced with four feet rows, and put ma nure for the first four years in the drill —changing the row every year twelve inches. By this system, you perceive, that in four years Ihe land in manured at intervals only twelve inches across. To put n.y manure down, I run a furrow with a latge shovel plow and follow with a diamond poinied double winged shovel, making a broad furrow and from six to eight inches deep. In this I put my manure and cover with two turning plow furrows and let it stand till ready to plant, then throw two turning furrows on this list and plant on fresh din with a Dow Law Hantcr and break out the middles at leisure with shovels to c mpletu the bed and give a working at the same time. Always plant late —never before the first of May, and thus a void July drought. After the fourth year appy manure broadcast, turn un der, and lay 1 ff your land 4 by 4 and plant on the drill, or rather on the lev el, ai tbe intersection of the rows. Thin by hand, plow troth ways and use no hoc. This is the outline of my plan. When I broadcast and plant in the lull I consider that the p- r 1 g tion cotton culture has been rear hed, Yo.rs tnily&x., F. C. Fuimau. A Very Good Thing £o have in every homc,| y everybody, old and young, in the country or vd hge, and in cities as well. A marvel of condensed information, boih use ful and trustwor hy, wi h a thousand or more Engravings, illustrating labor saving methods and devices iu the ticld, in the garden, and in the household, Animals, Plants, etc. — with many large beautiful pictures;ll lustrated stories for and Instructive talks with boys and girls; Plans of houses, barnca, and out buildings, with specifications All these, and much more will be found in the 42d volume of the American Agricul turist, now beginning, and at less cost than anywhere in the world. Its ex posures of humbug, a most valuable feature, is to be pushed with increased vigilance. To the previous staff of editors and contribu'ors many ad it'oos are now made* including the best writ ers all over the country. In its prime, this journal enters ;ts 43d volume, more vigorous than ever, with new writers,-new artists, new dress, etc. Though prepared at larger expense than most $ j and #4 magazines,, it is, owing to it immense circulation, sup plied, post paid, for $1.50 a year, and less to clubs—either English or Ger man edition. Single numbers, 15 cents. One sjiecimen, post paid, 6 cents. A plate copy of Dupre's last great painting. "IN THE M-EAD -OW,“ is presented to each yearly sttb sriber. They may neter reach this value a gain, but they £will bring much more they do now. As cotton planting with free labor passe* out of the experimen tal stage and a mixed husbandry has made the cotton planter prosperous, and new values are made for the seed and stalk of cotton, and new imple ments decrease the cost of planting and the planter's dependence on la bor, cotton lands will advance in price. —Atlanta Constitution, Riches in Hop Farming.
