It is a well settled maxim in busi
ness that money is reproductive only
as it is properly employed. Capital
invested in any department of eflFort
should be so operated as to yield rea
sonable returns and allow of annua!
deposits to the credit ledger, litis is
the only and real test of the success of
any undertaking, no matter to what
qtiild the operator may belong. So
true is this test that the merchant, the
manufacturer, the public carrier, or
any business that enters into the in
dustries, and forms a component of
the wealth, of a country, in default of
of reasonable gains on the amount in
vested must be forced into suspension
or bankruptcy. Then, if this l>e true
in the more active pursuits requiring
money outlays, it is no less a verity
as it effects the one great underlying
business of the people, agriculture.
We dare say there are more risks |
i taken by the farmers than by any oth- ‘
er class of operators. In the com
mercial sense this is not regarded as
s]>eculat!on, but in realty it is nothing
short of the most reckless gambling
with chances whose probilities arc de
termined only by the most vigilant
and active efforts of tho farmer. “As
one sows so shall he reap,” is really
the enunciation of a very sound btisi- ■
ness principle. If the policy pursued
be unsound in its proceedure, the re- I
stilts will be proportionately unsatisfac- :
tory and disappointing.
'Hie southern farmer-makes a mis
take when, by reason of a shiftless
economy, he is forced to pay larger
profits for what he consumes than the
products he creates will produce in
the open markets. At this point is
the outgo of the farmers profit’s though
in a large number cases, he seems to
be totally oblivious of the fact. An
other mistake, he pays taxes on two
thirds more landed estate than he ac
tually operates. If he proceeds on
sound and economic principles, lie
will open up and develop his interests
to their fullest extent, gradually as he
may be able, making his supplies large
ly at home, and thus increase his per.
ccntage of profits, as he decreases his
minimum ol expenses. If he needs
money to do this and money at rea
sonable rates of cost, which may he
obtained easily, it is better for him to
thus proceed, as the profits on such
developement will bill be greater than
the small margin he would borrow,
using his lands as security. This is
the true policy, and it bbest, from the
fact that the money thus employed
yields him a larger per cent than it
costs.
Eufaula Bulletin : Tom Davis, a
strapping big negro, standing six teet
two in his stockings, went into Mr.
Elslee's meat market on Saturday eve
ning, and seeing a laigc tub of s>acc,
remarked that he could cat ten pounds
ol it at a sitting. Eislee told him if he
would do so, he could have it for
nothing, put if he failed, then he
would pay one dollar for what he did
eat. T om agreed, and Eisle cut out a
four pound chunk of the souse and the
negro sailed i&to it. By this time a
large crowd had gathered around to
witness the exploit. lYm disposed of
fjur pounds and called for more, when
two or three gent'emcn present, inter
fered and raised £1.50 to pay Eislee
for his souse, fearing the negro would
kill himself and trouble might grow'
out of it. Tom.with his 4 pounds al
ready aboard, insisted ou tak ng a
drink and having the remaining six
pounds placed before him ; the dr nk
was furnished, but he was denied the
souse. He then told Eislee and tho
crowd that he could prove that he had
eaten a w?ter bucket full of speckled
peas* and that he did not want, a bet
ter chance than had been offered him
toget a good mess of souse for noth
ing.
Miss Lowery horsewhipped Edward
Orr,at Cray-Falls, Ontario, because
he preferred another girl in marriage.
Her two brothers and new lover held
him last while she plied the whip.
That happened a year ago. Orr ob
tained the whip, and has since dog
ged each of the three men separately
with it, the last to receive punishment
getting so much that he was confined
to his bed for a week. The girl then
became frigh ened, and wro'.e to ask
if she, too, was to be whipped. On
replied that he had no such intention,
but thought he might feel compelled
to thrash her father and several of her
cousins un’ess they treated him with
deference.
