Her Marvellous Imcrease n.
Wealth in the Past Twelve
Years.
The Chronicle has published from
Commissioner Henderson statistics
showing the marvelous agricultural
growth of Georgia, and contrasting the
products of 1870 with those of 18 2
The State shows over 200 per cent
increase in corn, 600 per cent, in
oats, 200 per cent in wheat, 75 per
cent in rye, too per cent in Iris h po
tatoes, 800 per cent in cane and sor
ghum, 400 per cent in sweet potatoes,
and a similar increase in the yield of
her farm and garden products. In
1870 Georgia raised 473,834 bales of
cotton. In 1880 the state raised 814
441 bales, nearly 100 per cent increase
in ten years, ranging as the second
producing State. Jn 1882 the cotton
production grew to 925,443 bales, the
increase being accomplished with a
diminished acreage. The crop of
1880 was raised on 2,355,425 acres,
while that of 1882 was raised on 2,-
356,425 acres. Horse have increas
ed 20 per cent, mules 31 per cent,
milch cows 36, other cattle 32, sheep
26 and swine 40 per cent. In 1870
Georgia had 70,000 fams; in 1880
she had 130,000. The estimated val
ue of farm products in 1870 was 80,-
000,000 ; in 1880 it went to $125,000-
000.
A New Departure in the Ap
plication of Electricity.
One of the most simple, useful and
practicable applications of e'ectricily,
which has yet been given to the pub
lic, is embodied in the new invention
of the Portable Electric Light Com
pany. The little machine which is
now attracting o much deserved at
tention is a small electrical contrivance
which performs the duties of light, r
and ? burglar alarm. Asa lighter it
can be arranged to produce instanta
neous light througout the house, and
can also be attached to a medical gal
vanic coil by which a powerful current
ofelectritycan be conveyed. The in
strument is small and compact, occu
pying a space ot only five inches
square, and can readily lie carried
front room to room, as it weighs but
five pounds, in the second capacity
when attached to window, safe or door,
the unfailing current places the ties
passer in a decidedly etnbarra sing
position, confronting such a party with
a startling bell ami iustant light. It
is equally adapted fer the ordinary us
es of a call bell.
Many prominent business men are
interested in the company, which was
incorporated under the laws of Mas
sachusetts. Orders or inquiries
should be addressed to the business
office, No. 22 Water Street, Boston.
The instrument is sold at the low price
o.’five dollars forthe light r; ten dollais
complete with attachments.—Boston
Evening Star.

An Unfortunate Child.
From tbe Marietta, G., Journal,
We have been told ol a child in
this countythat has a head shaped
like a huso's head, while its hands
are minus thumbs, and its fingers
tave grown solidly together, but
covering tho fingers is one large
naii to each band, presenting the
unsightly appearance of a horse's
hoofs. When the child was first
born the doctors said it would not
to be seven years old, but this
month its seventh birthday rolls
round, and it seem* to be healthy
nnd active, lint not overly bright.
This deformity, it is thought, was
brought about by it mother, while
