are as a class prosjierous, and why
elsewhere the reverse is thtf generrl

ing what the average farmer produces,
tells the story :

'lTie matter of economy does not
enter into this little table.- It is really
a matter of enersty, skill and jierhsjr,
we should add of home markets. In.
the most favored section of our ctiun- j
try —the section of clear skies and of I
soil that can Ire made'as productive as 1
any the sun ever shtfne oft —In fhnt
section the aver,age fanner produces
in a year only Sißs,- while in Weak

produces nearly twice as much’. '|Te

their lands have been in use a> a rule
much longer than the lartds in V if gin
ia or in Georgia, and yet these lands
are not exhausted. On the pontrary,;
they become ear h year more Jj^pslut-

scalping.
It mist, however, lie said in favor
of onr farmers, that they have not the
advantages of home markets, as have
the fannies of the slab's, :
These home markets are the result of
a heavy jioptilation and plenty of fac
tories. Manufacturing towns supply
customers for the smaHer farm ]*od
ucts —for garden vegetables and stijalT
fruits and butter and chickens and eggs
and honey and many similar asticles;
frhich comndenbly swell the income
of a Northern farmer. Such markets j
will soon be found, we hope, in the
'south, and when they are the South- ]
rn farmer will have no excuse of lag
ging behind the northern, fonner in
production. He should in fact, great
ly outdo him, for he works under a
happier sky in a kindlier soil.—Con

TURNER rAllis TO CRT A NEW TRMb —A
MVRUFK AND ARSON CASE.
The Superior Court of Meriwether
county convened on the 19th, with
His Honor Judge Simpsou W Harris
presiding and Colonel H. W. Rent
Solicitor General. This Court was
largely attended, anti was of consider
able imjiortance, there being several
criminal cases to lie heard. The cas
es that excited most interest was that
of State vs. John Kurgtrson, Ct b In
gram, colored, and John and James
Ingram, charged with robbery and ar
son ; rnd a motion for anew trial in
the case df the State vs. Pleasant M-
Tumer, convicted of murder at the
Last term of the Court and sentenced
to be hanged on tire gth day of Feb
ruary. Hie readers of the I’ost-Ap
peal have been made acquainted with
the facts in the Blandehburg and In
gram case, so a brief sketch of the
case and its ending will be sufficient.
Op the 29th day of last October two
parties, after setting several out-hous
es an fire, including a gin house and 1
barn on the premises of an okl citizen
riving in the upper part of Meriwether,
Alexander Ulandenburg entered the
dwelling disguise A, and after shooting
several shots promlscousty around ,
went to the trunk where Mr Bladen- I
liurg kept his money and 1 Kinds, and
carried it off to an okl field wher they
emptied the contents, consistihg of a-
Ixiut eleven hundred dollars in money
and five thousand dollars’ worth of li
nked States' bonds. They then care
fully placed the bonds' back in the
trunk, and taking all the retitly money,
the county. It was not long
before Furgersbn was captured by
Sheriff of Gwinnett county, and imme-
diatcly after his arrest he confessed
the whole, and implicated two young
men with whom he was living at time
of the robbevy. Furgerson and his
accomplice, Cub Ingrain (colored),
were both tried, convicted and sent to
jail to await the next term of
Court. Last Wednesday, when
the case was called, the Court
room was packed, and when a dirty
looking man with a keen black eye
anti a determined countenance, fo'-
lowed by a mulatto boy, was brought
into Court, there was intense ex
crement in the room. Fergus-n was
put on the stand first, and when asked
by the Solicitor it he was guilty or not
guilty of the charge against him, he
replied in a firm and seemingly com
posed voice, “I am.', tub Ingraham
betrayed considcralJe agitation, but
acknowladged his guilt. Juoge Har
ris gave them both 20 years at hardla
j bor in the chain gang.
A motion for anew trial was heard
