TALBOTTON, GA., TUESDAY, MARCH f3 1883.
A Beggar on Horseback.
A VIRdtNIAN WHO HAS SUPPORTED HIS
FAMILY BY BEGGING FAR AND WIDE.
A correspondent writing from Wash
ington, Va., says ; In a log cabin un
der a spur of the Blue Ridge Moun
tains, and near the village of Washing
ton, in Rappahannock county, Va.,
lives a man whose career has been a
remarkable one. For many years of
bis life he was literally a beggar on
horseback. Born of the shiftless race
to be seen in those mountains, he
found himself soon after reaching his
majority the head of a family, con
sisting of a Wife and a numerous brood
of children, for whose maintenace such
labor as he was willing to perform was
utterly inadequate. In this state of
affairs he naturally sought assistance
from the country folks around him,
and to such good puiposc that he has
encouraged to extend his field of op
erations, and no man became more
regular in P.Uendancn on the quarter
ly terms of the Superior Court than
“Kit Jenkins.” By dint of earnest
solicitations he managed to col’ect
enough from politicians, lawyers and
clients assemoledon these occasions to
purchase a somewhat aged and atten
uated steed and the second yeat after
the close of the war found in him “A
Beggar on Horseback.” In the first
company of infantry that marched
from the neighborhood to the first bat
tle-field of Mantissas under the com
mand of Capt. T B Massie were en
rolled two scions of the Jenkins fam
ily. One of them was cither killed in
battle or died in some hospital, and
“Kit’ did not fail to reinforce his ap
peals for help by recounting this fact.
At first his circuit was within a radius
of five miles, and every farmhouse
within that distance of his inounta n
hut received a visit f. om him at least
twice a year. He went prepared gen
erally wi h a bag large enough to hold
a side of bacon and half bushel of
meal, with room also for such favors
in shape ofcoffee, sugar and tobacco as
he could obtain. Alwajs respectful
and presenting a countenance calcu
lated to soften the stoniest heart, he
was seldom sent away empty-handed.
By degrees ho enlarged hi.
bouhtlx, and in the last year of hie
peripathetic career wasofton heard
of in towns fifty or sixty mile? away.
Once he crossed the Potowuo river
into Maryland and returned to his
home by wny of Washington, in
which city he was duly honored by
notices in Borne of the nowspnpsrs.
But it is of his last trip that lie
speaks with great pride, for it ws
then that he had the honor ol ring
ing the bell at the front door of the
guberuntorinl mansion in Richmond,
Just what happened to him after bell
had sounded •Kit.’ has neyer clearly
related, however, the next morning
found him asltido the old bay nag
whose bead was pointed towards
the borne of Jefferson at Charlottes
ville, There he created no little
merriment and acquired much from
the students ol the university, His
appearance on his return is said to
have resembled that of one ot Mos
by’s scouts after a visit to the house
of tome loyal Dutchman in the val
ley. jirg wants lor the coming
winter were supplied, but at tho ex
pense of the liftrof his faithful com
panion. After l.ie death of his
horse lie gave up his wandering, but
does not allow these within reasona
ble range to forget him or his ne
cessities, At hog-killing times
there are tew of the farmers around
who are not willing to put by a por
tion for the old man. At May and
June courts, #liett most of the Im
portant business of the fa. mers
is settled, ‘Kit's’ small figure may
still be seen and if his Jilt tie eyes
have lost somewhat of th.ir keen
ness, and if the black of his board
has given place to gray, he is none
the less ready to bandy j ikes or re
turn flattery lot kind words or
deeds. On electi m day he never
misses, and once havining promised
his vote for a candidate no soft
words or proffered bribes have been
found powoffi’l enough to .bake the
loyaltyalty of this prices of Beg-
