At this moment there is no article of necessity cheaper than cotton, and the prospects are that prices instead of advancing, will either remain where they are or fall lower. The southern crop that is now coming into market is known to be extraordinarily large, some not unreasonable estimates plac- ing it at more than seven millions of tales. In addition to this the crops of India and Kgypt are relatively large. The resnit of ail this L low prices and no profits (or the sothern fanners. In point of fact, prices are now at a point where the (icorgia former would make money by buying all the cotton that he wants instead of raising it. It costs less to make a pound of baton than it does tq make a pouqri of cot ton, but the price of bacon' is away above that of cotton; so if there is any Georgia former h i thinks he really needs cotton, he would do well to bor row a hog from a neighbor, seli it, and then buy his cotton. There are not more than ten farmers in Georgia that can make even the smdlest mar gin of profit by raising cotton for ten cents a pound, and these farmers have their business so systematized that there are no leaks anywhere. Ordi narily, the fanner who gets fifteen cents a pound for his cotton makes a profit that is but shabbily related to the Libor and expense of cultivating I his crop, and this is the great secret iof the proverbial poverty of the cot ton farmer. In 188a, the farmers al! oxer the I* n| . r . | v - f-s or dilll saved a Urge amount of forage in the shape of fodder and hay. The cot ton crop did not come up to exjiecta tions, but, under all the circumstances —that is to say, in the presence of foil corn-cribs, overflowing granaries ami a reasonable supply of provisions of all sorts—the jrrice at which it sold was reasonably remunerative. In any event, the lieginning of the present year found the farmer* of Georgia in a belter condition than they had liecn since the war. If they were not alto gether even with the world, they were at least jireparetl to move comforta bly in the direction of of prosjicrity. It ix to lie feared, however, that this lesson of comfort and compara tive indcjiendcnce his been lost upon the great majority of the formers. ITk* area devoted to small grain last I winter was greatly reduced ascompar with that of the winter before; and,in spite of the low price ot the staple and the immense crop that has j ,st been gathered, information tomes to us from every direction that the planters propose to plant a larger acreage in cotton than ever before. How many hardworking, energetic agriculturists this programme will bring to the verge of ruin it is imjiossiblc to esti mate but the nurnlier will lie large. Kstimates show that if the fnners of Texas rai>e even an average crop this year, two million liales will lie gather ed m that state alone—the increase in the number of liales being due to the increased acreage which the farmers propose to devote to cotton. Now, it the price has fallen below the point of remuneration with the pres nt crop, where wtH il get to when the largely increased crop of the next cotton tew is placed upon !ho market? In addition to this, the cotton crop* of India and Egypt, fostered and stl.„nhited by English capiial and English enterprise, are i increasing every year at a rate that • the farmers of the south and >not prop erly appreciate, and tbeso cottons have a direct influence iu regula ting the price of American cotton. The famous or infamous system of proteci ion, which is the pride ar and boast of sonic of the most influen lial organs of public opinion, doc* not contemplate the protection of the important industry if cotton growing, and consequently the plan ters have only their own scanty re sources to fail back upou. As matters stand, they will never be able to hold their own until they conclude to become independent of cotton—until every farm in the south is self- sustaining. When this is ttie case the southern cot ton will control the markets of the the world. It is useless to talk of holding the crop Nr higher prices. As long as the farmers continue to exhaust themselves and their lands m thev .in eriort to make cotton i "Uuting profitable by planting fli cotton, they will be at the rarrey of ihe supply roevehant* and the spec ulator, To tbe planter however, whose i.rm is self-snetaining-rria iug ils own supplies and furnishing iia own fertili* n—the price of cot ion is a matter of indiff-rence. It the price is high, be mvK.s large pritiis; if it ia low, he looses noth- j ing, for. on a self.-usuuoing farm, the eo*l of cultivation is always a' • the minima o • Such a tarm U tree from th* usurious citangiements of Uie 'e.td.l M.twuj, ttiai toe MscWf* ot .pending it* procvud-i fw it 16 that it slloaM have pri and iced, —At- lanta Cossti nation.
