Chicago, Aug. 2.—A series of
ballon ascensions has been given at
South End, the new summer resort
on the lake shore near South
Chicago. During the last month
they ha.e attracted large crowds.
The bsltopu used has been a hot-air
machiaeTand the tcronaut made the
ascent on a trapeze, no car or basket
being used. Three ascensions had
been made up to yesterday, the
tcronaut in each cate, after ascend
ing about 3,500 feet, landiug in
safety at various distances from the
grounds. On the third ascension,
the wind being ofTshore, the balloon
descended Into Lake Michigan
about a mile from shore. A tug
picked the aeronaut up.
Yesterday, in order to increase
the attraction, a race waa arranged
between W. L. Smith and A. L.
Tolbert. Smith haa been making
the Soutli End ascensions and Tol
bert ia from Kankakee. Both have
had much experience, and the bal
loons were almost exactly of the
same size and pattern. The three
points to be considered were speed
in inflating, height of ascent, and
distance traveled.
At 6 o'clock, the time for the
ascent, the wind was blowing
strongly from the northeast About
6:25 Tolbert stretched out his can-
vast, lighted hit fire, and begun the
work of inflating. At 6:51 his bal
loon was full to bursting. He gave
word to let go. The band began to
play, the crowd holding the balloon
let go, and the huge ship shot up
into the air, Tolbert hanging by
one arm to the trapeze and waving
bis hand to the spectators. Almost
immediately the strong wind caught
the balloon and it swayed and rock
ed dangerously. It continued to
ascend, and had evidently just
reached a calmer current of air,
some 1,500 feet above the earth,
when the balloon collapsed, and al
most in an instant was as flat as a
folded umbrella.
Tolbert was hanging at full length
from the bar by his hands. The
descent grew more rapid each in
stant. When within loofeet of the
ground, a grove of trees hid the
descending machine from the sight
of the crowd. A rush was made
in the direction of tbe spot where
the balloon bad struck. The wreck
was found scarcely three blocks'
away from the pavillion grounds,
anJ by it lay Tolbert, alive but ap

a good many shade trees, but no
other damage. An elegant rain fol
lowed. Fine rains have fallen
throughout the county and crops

parentiv dying. He was lying on
bis back, the blood gushing from his
nose and flowing from an ugly cut
over his left eye. Medical assist
ance was at once obtained, and the
injured man was carried to the
S rounds and laid on a bench in the
atbing house. It is feared his in
juries will prove fatal.
Smith’s balloon was ready for
the ascent about six minutes after
Tolbert’s terrible fall. The specta
tors were by this time aware of
Tolbert’s accident, and watched the
proceedings of tbe other aironaut
with intense interest. At 6:57
Smith gave the word, and went up
much the same as had Tolbert, the
band playiug and the crowd yel
ling. The wind rocked the balloon,
but having ascended about 2,000
feet the air ship struck a calm belt
and drifted slowly of! at right angles
with his former couise, ascending
gradually to m height of almost
3,500 feet At this altitude the man
looked about the size of a spider,
and tbe balloon was as steady as a
ship under full canvass.
Soon tbe machine began to des
cend, and, although it swayed dan
gerously as it entered the region
where tbe wind was strong, tbe bal
loonist descended without mishap
until within too feet of the ground,
when the seams on the top of the
great bag gave way, and the
machine fell rapidly.
The rents, however, were not
Urge enough to let all the air
•scape, and Smith was not injured
seriously. Both mronsuts used an
unusual quantity of hot air, and did
tbe inflating with more than ordi
nary speed.
