Washington, Aug. 1.—It is re
corded that Michael Angeio, while
engaged in his grand work on St.

potentate and wreaked an artistic
revenge upon him by delineating
his feature* upon the face of the dev

story is true or not is of little conse-

the country.' Yet, oddly enough,-
although gazed upon by hundreds
of thousands,' and though in exis
tence for nearly a score of years,-its
special interest has passed by unrec
ognized, not even a single employe
in or aboutthe building beingawsre

stands in boldest rebel and of heroic

feature in the allegorical Series of

Drumidi grew young again in his In
tense love for her, courted and mar
ried her. He was then at least sixty
and as aged in appearance as if he
had passed the allotted three score
and ten; she was scarcely twenty.
She admired his artistic powers
and also herself, and with a pardona
ble vanity suggested to him that he
perpetuate her as the Goddess in his
masterpiece. He acquiesced and
went considerably further than het
suggestion. It opened to him a fresh
idea which he proceeded to act
upon, and which, completed, fur
nishes the peculiar bit of history as
sociated with the painting.
“Treason and discord” are repre
sented by five human figures fleeing
into chaos before the Goddess of
Liberty with upraised sword, and
preceded by the American Eagle,
uromidi chose in his art allegory five
of the most prominent faces In the
just then dead Confederacy with
which to characterize the quintet in
process of being cast info outer
darkness; Jeflerson Davis, Robert
E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson,' Alex.
Stephens and Robert Toombs. Jack

left, is Davis with a face resembling
one of Macbeth’s witches in a hys

him is Alexander Stephens—the

None of the men so caricatured

the fact. The only one of ‘them'who
was ever in the capitol subsequent
to the war was Stephens, and he
never entered the rotunda. Brumi-
di, the artist, is dead, yet his yvork
will continue, no doubt, as long as
the capitol stands, and a generation
from now, when every other relic of
old and bitter sentiment will have
passed away, will continue intact.

lay across his body, leaving his head

OTHER FATAL MINE CASUALTIES.
During the month of July seven
persons lost their lives in the mines
of this district. Of this number
nine were killed by the fall of a roof,
one had his feet torn off in the ma
chinery of a screen room and one
was fatally injured by a blast. These
items arc rarely ever counted up in
the cost of coal mining, but they
form a dark chapter in the history
of the anthracite industry and give
