| . RAILROAD HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF.
■ * W« have but Utile idea aow that
Atlanta will raise the requeue $150,-
ooo to aecuro the Georgia Midland
Foad. That city teem* to take but
■ ^tle intercit in the project, and
* *(fc^al)r<*dy grown cold after a sub-

*W high time for Athena to atep
forward and lake the neeeaaary
atepa to bring this great artery of
commerce through our own city. It
^'-'jMrtte th.it our people are divided
to the^policy of building to the
V ■ -Georgia road, and there stopping
but they are about a unit in favor of
going to Columbus, if such a line ia
practicable. Columbus is determin
ed to get from beneath the despot
ism of the Central syndicate, and to
this end has raised enough money to
grade a road to Griffin. Madison,
Monticcllo and the intervening
country stand ready to net Co
lumbus at Griflin, and to this end
' Jia vc negotiated for the purchase of
- the old toad bed of the M., M. k G.
pad. which they pledge to com-
j and get ready for the iion. Of
course, the Richmond & Danville
road will be only too glad to con
tribute ‘the iron and rolling stock,
and thus secure a new line 140
miles long and penetrating one ot
the richest sections of Gcuigia.
With but little exertion, and a small
sacrifice on the part of Athens, wc
can have'this great-trunk line termi
nating in our city. To secure it ii
only needed a- concert of action on
the part of our people. Wc must
get together and settle on some defi
nite plan of action. Delay is dan
gerous, and while wc arc wailing
and quarrelling among ourselves,
the project may either fall through
or Atlanta arouse to action and
gather the fruit. Some fifteen years
a Col. Bufortand other prominent
capitalist! interested in the then
projected Air-Line road between
Charlotte and Atlanta came
Athens and proposed that if our
City would subscribe $100,000 that
they would bring the road through
this place, via Anderson, S. C., and
through Hart, Franklin and Madi
son counties. This route was
surveyed, and Athens had but to
plank down the cash and get the
line. Then, As now, the the peopl
of Athens were divided as to the
, policy of the proposition. It was
argued that it wonld carry our trade
to Atlanta, and prove the commer
djal deathiknell of the Classic City
rThc'consequence was, we refused
the great ofler, and eventually had
toqxpend our $100,000 in building
the branch to Lula, in order to tap
J i line that we could-have so
tly secured. The building of the
FtLine lost to us our best motin
tain trade. Now, if Athens fsils to
setae the project to build to Colum
bus, history will again repeat itself,
Madison is determined to have a
railroad, and if she don’t get it to
able worm is located in the discov
erer does not tell us, but wl pre
sume that it is under the bottom of
the Coat. We believe every word
that back-wooda scientist says, only
we think he has spelled; the word
“sole” incorrectly, and had the re
verse end of the instrument pointed
et the object.
State . Senator T.- M. Brown
is one of the best workers
in the Georgia legislature,
and the Fourth Estate points to hit
splendid record with pride and
gratification. He ia aa true as steel
to bis party, his principles and his
friends, and reflects honor upon his
Constituents. This gentleman has
promised to visit Athens soon,
when the Young Democracy will
give him a hearty welcome.
A vast number of interests and
classes are represented in the Geor
gia legislature, and hence it is im
possible for business to progress
as smoothly as in a private assem
bly. The history of all such bodies
is that you must strain a great deal
of trash to get a little solid sub*
stance. We cannot see that the
present body has wasted any ntore
time than their predecessors.
A gentleman just from Washing.
ton City says but few republicans
are removed from office, and whtn
dismissed they are given places in
suiiic other department. There ia
growing and wide-spread dissatis
faction among democrats to the
President's policy. Fled Douglass
and all of his family are yet fed
from the government teat.
Athens feels deeply mortified at
the shameful reports about the Rev.
Dr. Armstrong, of Atlanta, and we
trust and believe that this eminent
minister will yet be able to explain
matters to the entire satisfaction of
the public. Wo must never too
hastily condemn a brother, but ever
hold the mantle of charity in hand.

will see our merchants subscribing
to bpild a branch road to Madison,

they have lost. It matters not
whether we exchange the Clayton

Athens cannot afford to sleep over
this golden opportunity. Let our
