of unsuspecting and greedy coun

The modus operand! of the game
is as follows: The swindler se
cures a copy ot a mercantile direc
tory and selects the namea of coun
try merchants and others in small
cities and towns whose financial
standing is quoted at from $1,000 to
$2,000. A circular is then address
ed to the intended victim as fol
lows:
New Youk, .—Dear Sir:
You will probably be surprised as
to the manner in which I secured
your name and address, but my con
fidential agent, who was in your
part of the country a short time
since, sent me your address, and in
formed me that he thought you
would be a good man to do busi
ness with. My business is not ex
actly a legitimate one, but thu green
articles I deal in are very safe and
profitable to handle. Do you under
stand? I cannot be very plain until
I know you mean business. The
sizes are ones, twos, fives, tens and
twenties. They were printed from
plates which were stolen from the
I'reasurv department, and are really

do not wish to do business with
me, do me no harm. If you decide
to transact business with me write
me at once and 1 will send terms

THE SAMPLE.
If the “boodler” receives a favor-
uble reply to the circular, he at once
encloses a sample, which is a good
United States one dollar bill cut in
two, in the following letter:
Dear Sir: Enclosed find sample
of bills. My terms arc 200 of the

ratio. I cannot deal in sums of less
than $2oo. If you are coining on

Batavia, Sspt. 1.—Yesterday at
noon Chauncev Hough, 24 years
old, who has lived fur eight yean
with his upcle, Harvey Weed, a
well-to-do farmer three milea west
of Batavia, drove his team in irom
the field where he had been plough
ing, and said to Mr. Weed:
“I suppose I can get off this af
ternoon?”
Mr. Weed acquiesced, _ and
Hough, after eating bis dinner,
changed his clothes and started out
to walk to this village. On the
way he stopped at John Garwood’a
mill and collected a note for $165
that Garvrood had given him, paya
ble on demand. After reaching
Batavia he visited a livery stable
and paid a small bill, and then went
to the office of Dr. L. L. Tozier,
who had been treating him for a
nervous disorder, secuted a supply
of medicine, and paid up his bill.
Hough then went to the Central
station and took the cars for Buffalo.
At 4 o’clock this morning news
reached Batavia that a coat, which
the contents indicated, belonged to
Chauncey Hough of this place, had
been picked up at S o’clock last
evening in Prospect Park at Niag
ara Falls. It was supposed the
owner had committed suicide by
jumping over the falls. In Hough's
pocitetbook was an envelope ad
dressed to “Miss Hattie Goodrich,”
in which was a blank piece of pa
per. Kiss Goodrich is a daughter
of a 11e.tr neighbor of the Weed
family. Hough had been devoted
to her, b it they had quarreled, and
he seemed to have transferred his
affections to another young lady.
It is thought that disappointed
love, together with his nervous
trouble, unsettled his mind, and led
him to suicide. Mr. Weed telt for

pass such good money in that dis.
trict and make a considerable profit
he answers without delay, and the
swindler then writes to him and di
rects him to some hotel, also telling
him to not make any acquaintances
in the city and to beware of bunco
steerers and confidence men. Upon
the greenhorn’s arrival at the hotel
one of the “boodler’s” steerers
meets him and escorts him to the
office. There he is shown pack
ages of new United States
Treasury notes of all denomina
tions, and to make him doubly sure
that they are genuine the swindler
tells him to take a five or ten dollar
bill and go out with hit agent to see
if he can spend it. Of course any
storekeeper changes the bill, which
makes the “tucker” more anxious to
get hit pockets full of them. But
the “boodler” doesn’t let him have
the notes then and there; it might
be dangerous. So he p«<* up
whatever amount the victim wants
to buy into a neat package and puts
it into a small satchel, and informs
the “buyer" that he will express the
satchel to his ome, and he will
have the money when he arrives
there.*'
HINOINO THE CHANGES.
This is generally satisfactory, and
while on their way out of the office
the satchel Is “rung” or changed by
a confederate, he taking the one
with the money in it and giving the
“steerer,” who always carries the
bag to the express office, one with
slips of paper in it. This satchel is
expressed by tha “steerer” in the
countryman's presence, and the lat
ter is hurried away from the city.
If tne victim insists upon taking the
satchel, his money is refunded.
When he arrives at hi* home he
finds the satchel full of paper in
stead of money, and often writes to
the “boodler," who sometimes
makes him believe that tqe bag waa
opened on the road, and occasion,
allv one victim is roped in twice.
Thousands of dollars have been
made by this game in the past few
year*, and the swindlers are almost
out of reach of the law, as the “vic
tim” who would buy counterfeit
mouey is generally a bigger knave
than the “boodler'* who sold it to
him.

A Hind Reader.
Miss Mattie Pound, sister to the
editors ol the Macon, Ga., News, is
a mind reader. She does not re-
quire to touch the person whose
thoughts she wishes to divulge but
fixes her eyes upon the person's
face and quickly tells ot what the
person is thinking. She does even
more than this. She tells the
thought in exactly the words the
person would use if he were to tell
it himself. Members of Miss
Pound’s family are frequently sur-
prised to hear her repeat iu words
their most secret thoughts, and they
arc equally surprised at the readt-
ness with which she does it She
seetns to be unconscious of any
strange feeling when thus engaged,
and sutlers no inconvenience from
it. She is in fine health, bodily and
mentally. Another fact connected
with Miss Pound quite as curious as
the one already mentioned is that
she frequently foretells events in
dreams. She has done this so often
that when at the breakfast table she
sa 1 s, “I dreamed, last night, that
su&li a thing will happen at such a
time," her mother and brothers are
sure that the event will come to pass.
