Have Their Hands Full,
For a week past Collector Smith and
Deputy Knox have had their hands full
looking after the moonshiners around
Athens, and are now on at least a half
dozen hot trails after illicit stills. Fora
time the business seemed to languish in
this section, aud was in a fair way of
being entirely broken up; but of late it
has revived, and is more popular than
ever. Collector Smith has been in Athens
and raiding the country round about
for some time past, and is meeting with
fine succees. Friday he captured Lewis
Smith, of Madison county, the real owner
of the still raided a few days since, and

merchautp to-day. Mr. J. H. Dawson,
another clever boy, representing Moore,
Marsh & Co n has laid business aside

thing more substantial.
Mr. J. A. Thomas, of San Mareas,

Col. Mark Wooding, an old Union
Point boy, but now of the Southern Ex
press, with headquarters in Atlanta, is
having a good time with his his friends
here for a few days. ,
Ten drummers did the town yesterday
and this morning, with lots more to ar-
arive.

American, has spent many years abroad

Music, Leipsic, and has many flattering
testimonials of his proficiency. Monte

Tardiness in the schools rapidly de
creasing. The bad weather and gener
al aickness affect the attendance on the
schools much leas than is thought.
Teachers are becoming better drilled
into tho forms of work, and the schools
are gradually increasing in effectiveness.
It will need severs! years to make the
system what it ought to be. 180 cards
issued for the new term, ail but 13 to
whites. It is especially gratifying these
schools (white) have been organized and
conducted for five months without a sin
gle case of corporal punishment. The
discipline is well known to be strict and
good. Thoup-town primary is gradu
ally filling up. 26 visits paid the nor
mal classes of teschers sinee Jsn. 3rd.
These sessions are held in the superin
tendent's office every Tuesday afternoon
at 3.30 o'clock. The whole field of the
work of the schrol is being gone over by
the superintendent—organization, disci
pline, subjects, methods and so on, the
teachers taking part from time to time.
The teachers of th* etty are invited to
attend at their pleasure. As will be
seen many are now doing so regularly,
