Report of Committee on Streets,
Brains and Bridaes.
The proceedings of tbe last meeting
of Council are crowded out this week,
but we make room for the following,
ns it properly belongs on the business
of last year:
Brunswick, Ga., Jan. 1st, 1882.
To the Honorable Mayor and Council of
the City of Brunswick:
As Chairman of streets, drains aud
bridges tor tho year 1881, I submit
the following report ot committee:
During the year jast passed we re
duced in width tbe ditch across New
castle street, by tbe market, and built
a new bridge fall width of said street;
also baiit a culvert across Mausfield
street in front of Advereibeb and Ap
peal office. Repaired, also, the cis
tern corner Newcastle and Monk
streets. We mode a new bridge and
culvert, fall width, across Mansfield
street, near W. H. Anderson’s resi
dence, besides grading street nearby.
Wo filled und graded street from
Monk streofc to the Brackot works.—
We filled up and graded Monk street
from Putnam’s stable to Bay Btreet,
mado aside-walk from Bay street to
Judge Mershon’s residence, graded
streets by A. Borchwrdt, C. G. Moore,
and from Mooro’s corner past Judge
Houston’s resideuco, built bridge by
O’Connor’s residence, and also two
others by Baptist church, built bridge
by Stovesou’s stables, and graded
street in its vicinity, rebuilt the tank
near Post Offico, performed consider
able grading on Bay street, from Ho
tel to Gloucester street, placed sever
al lumps ou different streets and paid
for tbe oil and lighting thereof, han
dled four flat loiuls of shells aud a
largo quantity of shell from the shops
of oysli i men and placed the same on
side-walks aud streets, set out one
hundred und ninety trees, which were
paid for by D. T. Dunn, being the
number that died out of two hundred
set out in 1879 by tho city, also set
out seventy more, paid for by D T.
Dunn.
Onr committee have also performed
considerable work by way of clearing
out tbe white cemetery; also, repaired
and graded certain streets crossiug
Fair Grounds, ns well as under-brush
ing the low grouuds therein, which
will he noticed bv l lie observer.
Wc might farther enniuerate the
work by onr committee, but will close
by saying we have tried to keep the
city streets clean, and think we haw
done so. We have bought lumber in
all cases as cheaply as possible, as is
evidenced by the purchase, of D. C.
Hacon Co., for the city, of 25,000
feet of lumber for $80.00, which with j
druyage, etc. added, amounting to
$45.00, made the sum of $125.00. Wei
let Fair Association have 9,000 feet of,
lumber out of tbo lot which tho eity
could uot use at price paid by tho j
city, to-wit $5.00 por 1,000 foet, which
Fair Association pnid for. Or more
plainly, tho city had 16,000 foet at five
dollars and tho Fair Association 9,000
feet at five dollars, and both parties
paid for the amount used by each at
same rate.
It is but just to say our committee
have bad tho use of A. T. Putnam’s
teuins at following rates: Cart, mule
and man per day $1.50; wagon, two
mules and driver, $3.00; and iu no in
stance has he been paid for teams
when not actually used. The commit
tee have had the faithful services of
Lewis Harris and John Gill, to whom
mnch praise is due for work well per
formed. Our endeavor has been to
keep tbe streets and numerous bridg
es in order; also, cheaply ns possible,
consistently, doing it well. The cost
of above work will be shown in Treas
urer's report
Respectfully, D. T. Dunn, C’ro,
