AN ORDINANCE,
Jn regulate certain hinds of business
,citliin the City of Brunswick, fix the
amount of tax to be paid for the priv
ilege of pursuing such business, and
prescribe penalties for a violation of
the same.
Section 1. The Mayor and Council qf the City of
Brunswick, in Council assembled, do hereby ordain,
That ever>’ per* on or flm transacting, or offering
to transact either of the kind* of business specified
iv. this section shsl 1 pay the tax hereinafter speci
fied, viz:
1. Every auctioneer shall pay a tax of Ten Dollars,
a ad in addition thereto a tax of one per cent shall
t>e imposed upon the gross amount of all auction
sales made within the city by such auctioneer; and
Lc Khali make, at the end of each month, a return
of all auction sales made during the month, and
pay the per centage thereon to the Clerk and Treas
urer within three days after the end of each month.
2. Every agent for an iuaurance company shall
ply for each conapauy represented by him Fifteen
Dollars.
3. Every average or insurance adluster, either Io
cs! or transient, and other than a local ogent of an
insurance company, shall pay Twenty-five Dollars.
4. Every agent of a steamship company shall pay
Twenty-five Dollars.
5 Every agent for a steamboat or sailing vessel
line shall pay Ten Dollars.
6. Every agent for the sale of real estate, and for
the collection of renta, on commission, shall pay
Fifteen Dollars.
7. Every local ogont for the sale of sewing ma
chines shall pay Ton Dollars, and every transient
agent shall pay Twenty-ilvo Dollars.
i. Every agent l'or the sale of any article whatev
er, or any person vUlting the city as an itinerant
physician, or for the sale of proprietary articles,
cauvasser selling books, maps, pictures or otbor ar
ticles, either for money or by subscription, shall
pay such tax as may bo fixed by tho Mayor in each
case.
o. Every local daguorrreau artist, photographer
or ambrotypist shall pay Ten Dollars; and each
transient ono shall pay, for each month or
time. Ten Dollars. • ;J-
10. Every banker, brokei or other person doing a
banking, brokerage or oxchango business, or en
gaged in buying or selling exchange, curreucj,
bbudr, stocks er other securities for a profit, -or in
loaning money, shaving notes, discounting com
mercial paper, or collecting samo and charging
themfor, or advancing on collaterals for commis
sion, interest or otherwise, whether he keep an of-
flee or not, shall pay Forty Dollars.
11. Every bakery shall pay Ton Dollars.
12. Every barber shall pay, for each chair. Five
Dollars.
13. Every blacksmith shop shall pay, for each
forge. Five Dollars.
14. Every cabinet shop fox making or repairing
furniture shall pay Five Dollars, and tho tax that
may be hnrnaftcr lovled upon the sales as furniture
dealer.
15. Every naval store broker shall pay Ten Dollars.
10. Every naval store dealer shall pay Forty Dol-
hr*.
17- Every merchandise, provision or forage brok
er shall pay Ten Dollars.
18. Every ship broker shall pay Ftftoeu Dollars. ,
19. Every master builder and every contractor, of
whatever character, other than master bulldors,
shall pay twenty dollars.
20. Evory carpoutor, mason, plasterer, painter,
and every mechanic, of whatever character, taking
contracts for work oxcoodlng flftcon dollars, shall
pay Five Dollars.
•21. Evory cigar manufactory shall pay Ten Dollars.
22. Every circus shall pay Ono Hundred Dollars
•>. day, evory menagerie shall pay Twenty-five Dol
lars per day, and overy sldo show, where an addi
tional charge is made,shall pay Twenty-five Dollars.
2a. Every cotton press shall pay Fivo Dollar* per
mouth while In operation.
24. Every shop or store for tho sale of cigars, to.
bacco, snuff, etc., shall pay Ten Dollars and the
tax levied upon other sales.
25. Every manufactory of confectionery shall pay
Ten Dollars.
20. Evory traveling theatrical company shall pay
Ton Dollar? for tho first and Five Dollars for each
iMieceeding performance.
27. All traveling concerts, exhibitions and shows,
•>f every charictur, shall pay Five for the
first and Two and one-half dollars for each snooeod-
ing po rformanco.
28. Evory dancing school shall pay Tom Dollars.
**.». Every person or firm dealing in tropi-ul shells,
uriositioa, etc., shall pay Tun Dollars
.10. Every dealer in ice, in quantities .-xerw-dtag
uity pounds, shall pay Twenty Dollars.
31. Every one-horse dray, wagon, cart, buggy or
otUer vehicle hauling or carrying for hire, or u*oJ
by bakers, butchers, manufacturers of sod.a or rain-
* ral waters, merchants, builders or other persons
for tho delivery of bread, meats, soda or mineral
waters, ice, goods, wares and merchandise sold, and
lumber and other material used, shall pay Fivo Dol-
Urs and twenty-five cenla; and evory two-horee
wagon, carriage or other vehicle hired or so used
*htll pay Ten Dollars and twenty-five cents, the
number being furnished fcy tho city and affixed to
each vehicle.
32. Every drummer or commercial traveler wh«
<*Ui goods, wares and meachandlse to merchants,
*i*her hr sample or taking orders, shall pay Tweu-

33. Every transient trader in goods, wares,
merchandise, or other articles of any description,
*ho ueUI by sample or otherwise, to others than
merehaiA, shall, before exposing the same for sale*
pay such amount as shall be-fixed by the Mayor in

it. Every person dyeing or renovating articles of
clothing shall pay, for each woek or lesa time, Fifty
Cents.

43. Every tailor boarding house shall pay Twenty
Dollare.
44. Every person or firm telling ipirituofis liquors
in quantitiet of one quart end upwards, and not
drank on the premises under any circumstancea,
shall be considered wholesale dealers, and pay, for
each quarter, Ten Dollars.
45. Every person or firm selling spirituous or
malt liquoxs iu quantities less than one quart, and
consumed on the premises, shall bo considered re
tail dealers, and pay, for each quarter, Fifty Dollars.
40. Every person or firm selling malt liquors by
the keg or ease shall be considered wholesale deal
ers, and pay, for each quarter. Ten Dollars.
47. Every person or firm selling malt liquors in
quantities lsss than a keg or case, and consumed on
the premises, shall be considered retail dealers, and
pay, for each quarter, Ten Dollars.
48. Every huckster or peddler of fruit, ice cream
and small wares shall pay Five Dollars.
49. Every grinder of a hand organ shall pay, for
each woek or less time, Five Dollars.
50. Every person or firm doing bnsineH as com
mission merchants shall pay Thirty Dollars; and
evory master of r vessel, agent or other officer qf any
vessel, or any other person, who shall sell any
goods, wares, merchandise, or any at tide whatever,
from any wharf or vessel, or personally purchase
cargo or collect freight money, shall be conslderod
a commission merchant, and pay Thirty Dollars.
51. Every Uvery stablo shall pay Twenty-five Dol-
ism, and the tax required by tho 31*t paragraph of
this section on each double or single wagon, dray,
cart, carriage or buggy used by the keeper thereof;
and ho shall (also pay one dollar for each horse or
mule sold by or through himself for other parftieq:
and he shall make a return, nnder oath, of the
amount of such sales at the end of each quarter, and
pay such amount to the Clerk and Treasurer.
52. Every jewelry store shall pay Fftcon Dollars,
53. Every person or firm engaged in buying junk
of any description whatever shall pay Ten Dollars.
54. Every millinery establishment shall pay Fit-
teen Dollars.
55. Every store for tho sale of books, papers, pic
tures and articles of stationery shall pay Five Dol
lars and the tax thut may be levied on all other sales.
50. Evory job priutiug office shall pay Ten Dollars.
57. Evory ptaEon or firm telling fresh meats shall
pay, for the year or any fraction thereof. Forty Dol
lars, and parties taking ont this license shall have
the privilege, but not exclusive, oi ulso selling poui-
try, and vegetables under the license, but
shall pay the tax that may be levied upon all othc
sales.
58. Every person or firm opening oysters for sale
or shipment shall pay, for each quarter, Twelve
Dollars and fifty cents, the same to t»e remitted If
tho parties opening will give the shells to the city
for tho use of tho streets.
50. Every person or firm engaged iu buying and
shipping fish shall pay, for each quarter, Fivo Dol
lars.
GO. Every rostaurant or eating house shall pay
Ten Dollars.
61. Every shoemaker s shop shall pay, for each
bench, Five Dollars.
02. Every person or firai manufacturing or bot
tling soda or mineral waters shall pay Ten Dollars.
63. Every porson or firm manufacturing and
ing soda water from a fimut shall pay, for oeeh
quarter, Fivo Dollars.
04. Every grist mill shall pay Ten Dollars.
05. Every saw mill shall pay Twenty-five Dollars.
6G. Every planing machine shall pay Twenty Dol
lars.
67- Evory shipping master shall pay Twouty Dol
lars.
6S. Every shop or stand f^r tho sale of fruita, nuts
and confectionery shall pay Five Dollare and the
tax that may bo levied on all othor sales.
G9. Every skating rink shall pay Thirty Dollars.
70. Every stevedore or other person taking con
tracts for loading or discharging vessels shall pay
for thuryoar, or any fraction thereof, One Hundred
dollars, and tho fitrtlmr sum of Five Dollars per
quarter for each foreman or other person employed
by him to superintend or direct the loading or dis
charging of any vossnl contracted with by him. And
every porson who shall be employed by the master
or consignee of any vessel t< •J*upcriutend|or direct tho
loading or discharging of such vessel, shall be con
sidered and held to be a stevedore, and shall pay the

71. Every billiard table used tor public play,
whether paid for In looney or purchases, at the bar.
shall pay Fifteen Dollars.
72. Every pool table used for public play, whether
paid for in money ur purchases at the bar shall pay
Twenty-fivo Dollars.
7b. Every bagatelle, or other table or device, upon
or by which any gain* is played, or money lost or
won by the public, shall pay for each month or less
time Fifty Dollars.
Every Wheel of fortune for public play shall pay
for each month or less time Five Hundred Dollars.
75, Every centennial board for public play shall
pay for each month or less time Fifty dollars.
70. Evory ball or ten-pin alley shall pay Fifteen
Dollars.
77. Every tallorto establishment shall pay Tan
Dollars.
78. Every tin-srait&’s shop shall pay Tec Dollars.
79. Every person of firm engaged in buying or ship
ping timber, lumber, etc., (mill owners in the city
excepted) sholl pay Forty Dollars,
80. Every inspector, measurer and checker oi
timber, staves, shingles, etc., shall pay Biro Dol
lars, and tako the oath prescribed by seotiaa 908 of
tho code of ordldances.
81. Every manufacturer of naval stores shall pay
for each still Thirty Dalian.
82. Every undertaker shall pay Twenty DcBsrs.
83. Every person, firm or corporation furufcihiug
«r supplying vessels wfttb water shell pay Ten Dol
lars.
84. Every warehouse or shed for the storage of
guano or other fertilizers, if located above the wharf
off. H. McCullough, or below the mouth of the ca
nal. thall,pay Thirty Dollars.
85. Every person or firm keeping a wood or coal
yard, or dealing in the same, shall pay Ten Dollars.
80. Every wheelright shop for the making or re
pairing of carri ages, buggies, wagons, etc., shall pay
Five Dollars.
87. Every naval store Inspector shall pay Five
Dollars.
88. Every Inspector of fertilizer* shall pay Five
Dol lars.
The license tax provided for in tbu t *ction shall
run from tho first day of February. 1882. totbethir
tv-first day of January, 1883, and shall be issued by
t'ie Clerk and Treasurer of the city, impressed with
the seal of the city, and*approved «*v the Mayor .
Each license shall be in the name "f th* per«on to

whom it is issued, and shall not be transferable,
and the tame shall be a registered tax and payablo
before being issued. And if auy person transacting
or offering to transact either of the kind* of busi
ness specified in this section, shall bo found with
out such license displayed in a conspicuous manner
in his, her or their place of business, or shall fail or
refuse to exhibit the same whenever called on to do
so by the Marshal of the city, or other person au
thorized to do so, he, the or they ahall be subject,
ou conviction therefor before the Mice Court, to a
fine not less than ten or exceeding two hundred
dollars, confinement in the Guard House or labor on
the public streets for s term not exceeding sixty
days, at the discretion of the court. And all per-
sons commencing either of the kinds of business
specified in this section before the first day of May,
1H82, except those who pay by the year or quarter,
shall pay the entire amount of such license for the
year; thoso commencing between the first day of
Mgy and the thirty-first day Of July, shall pay three-
fourths of such amount; those commencing bo-
tween the first day of August and the thirty-first
day of October, ahall pay one-half of such amount;
jrad those commencing after the first day of Novem
ber, shall pay one-ionrth of such amount.
8ac. 2. And be it further ordained, That eve^y
person or firm wishing ty take out a license to re
tail any spirituous or fermented liquors shall apply
in writing at the regular meeting to be held on the
25th inst., or at any subsequent meeting, specifying
the place where he, the or they intend to carry on
the business, which application shall be accompa
nied witu the written Consent of the beads of the
three tamiliea living nearest the place of business.
And If the license be granted, the applicant ahall
give a good end sufficient bond in tho sum of one
thgusanddollan, Approved by the Mayor, that he,
she or they will keep an orderly and dece nt house,
and that they will not violate the law* of the State,
or tho ordinances ol the city, touching the sale or
giving away of spirituous or fermentod liquors.—
And be, she or they shall take and subscribe, be
fore tho Mayor of the city, the followinn oath
flrmation:—■■ -being about to engage in bus
iness ss retail dealer in spirituous or fermented
liquors in the city of Brunswick, do solemnly swear
or affirm that will not employ any minor for the
sale of snch liquors; that will not soil or permit
any spirituous liquors to be sold to :«n iut xuuted
person; and that will not sell or furntab r per
mit any spirituous liquors to bo sold or furnished
any person on the Sabbath day or night, so help
God, which oath or affirmation shall be filed with
tho Clerk and Treasurer of the city, before the is
suance of the license.
8fc.4. And be it further ordained, That every per.
son, who shall violate any of the provisions of the
cond section of this ordinance, shall be subject,
ou conviction thorofor before fhe Police Court, to a
fine not less than ten, nor exceeding two hundred
dollars, or confinement in the Guard House, or la
bor ou the public streets fora term not exceeding
ninety days; and the license of evory person so onn.
victed shall be immediately revoked, by the Mayor,
and shall not be again issued unless by action of
Gouncil upon a written application therefor.
8ec. And be it further ordained. That all ordi.
nances snd parts of ordinances, in conflict with thin
ordinance, be, and the same are hereby repealed.
